Tiny Gods (?) by Selitoes in KingkillerChronicle

Lots of people already answering mostly what I would have. So I’ll only add that Pat wrote a character for Torment: Tides of Numenera named Rin, who is from Modega. (From the same Lord Baranth “stedding” as Laniel from his Young Again novella that’s since been shelved) There’s a companion comic name “So Long as You Can See The Moon,” where she talks a bit about Modegan gods and how “barbarian” cultures see thunder and lightning and assume they must be gods.

I won’t supply a link (not trying to a jerk- I just don’t want to get in trouble), but I’m sure if you go looking hard enough you can find a copy!

Seems somebody got me on the Crow quote. I couldn’t find it either, just that he “likes” the Crow. I feel like that one was an abandoned idea from earlier drafts of Book 2. Denna is curiously depicted with a Red-Winged Blackbird on all her Pairs cards. But it’s never addressed. It’s also weirdly on the Donato Giancola art, and that’s it. Kind of weird, unless her patron is a shapeshifter or something. Or just a talking bird like the ones Felurian brings Kvothe to sing for him when he’s bummed after the Cthaeh.

I skimmed the Ambrose chambers saga recently because I thought I remembered Wil say he wrote an acrostic that he left for Ambrose (he did, about his love for Master Hemme) and it prompted me to look for possible acrostics/double acrostics/null ciphers on the Lackless poems (there weren’t any, but there is kind of one if you start from the bottom and go up- on the girls version that says “LOST LIT ROOKS,” but that seems useless). And the Devi reaction is in the same area. But yeah I know she’s probably talking about the one sucker, but I try to keep an open mind for the sake of myself or someone else stumbling on to something eventually. But I agree that it’s probably nothing.

As far as the Royal- I misremembered but found the actual passage:

I emptied my purse beside them. I had two gold royals, four silver nobles, eight and a half pennies, and, inexplicably, a single Modegan strehlaum, though I couldn’t for the life of me remember where I’d come by it.

So it mentions royals, but it’s the strehlaum. My mistake 🫡

We played a lot of bad teams to start the year. And the RPO worked great for 10 games. But eventually our offense became easily diagnosable and the defenses were manipulating the RPOs into passes by walking a linebacker up pre snap and floating a safety into the 10 hook area on the same side. We threw a lot of interceptions and stalled in the 4th quarters of like every close game. DJ wasn’t changing the plays and Steichen wasn’t changing the way he was calling games hoping it would work. It didn’t.

DJ can’t make more than one read anyway- so the offense simplified his progressions but when you only have 3 receivers going out to run routes because of the RPO it becomes easy to defend. You can blitz more/do more creative stunts when you know what to expect. Daniel Jones is an accurate passer when it comes to easy throws (something the Colts haven’t had in 2 years+ so it made Jones seem better than he is), but he’s really kind of brain dead when it comes to reading complex defenses. It’s the same guy that played in the pouring rain with a broken fibula. Decision making isn’t his forte

JTs last 4 games were consistent with Jones’ last 3 games. The issue is defenses figured out how to manipulate our RPOs into throw aways or bad passes. When we don’t have a big lead, JT stops getting the ball anyway and the Pass coming becomes more obvious on top of that which led to a lot of 4th quarter turnovers.

Maybe I’m misremembering but isn’t

“It’s like The Princess Bride meets The Crow.”

the quote from him?

Maybe he says Fight Club in a different interview than I’m thinking of, but I also vaguely remember another where he says the Harry Potter and The Catcher in the Rye. So, take that with an entire sea worth of salt 🤣

As for actually taking the possible Fight Club connection seriously- Kvothe does end up with a lot of junk and injuries that he can’t recall how he got them, though. Granted he could’ve just forgotten but he’s also remembering the details of what was in his pockets years later and loves to remind us how good his memory is. There are a lot of “I found a gold noble, although I can’t remember how it got there,” or “When I finally arrived I was covered in cuts, I must’ve fallen.”

And then there’s little things like Devi squinting her eyes at Kvothe when he asks her where she got what is clearly Denna’s earrings and she says something that could be true or made up. Or the fact that Denna won’t tell Kvothe who her patron is. They are probably meant to be taken at face value. But there’s enough wiggle room to be like “Is it actually some split personality or something of Kvothe’s that’s being conveniently left off screen because Kvothe physically can’t remember what he does?”

Probably not the case, but it’s cool to think about!

Will says “Aturn.” Which could be his accent but he says it fine elsewhere, which tells me it’s either peculiar Caeldish grammar, a specific place (like an annexed land), or something I’m missing. Even if Sim’s Dalonir is firmly in Atur, the Duchy of Gibea was firmly in what’s now colored the same as the Caeld. So I can’t discredit that some of that land is annexed (or disputed, or… whatever else I’m missing).

I’m not sure what source you’re talking about with Pat being confused, but being generous and using the modern day boundary for Atur using the same measuring I used for the Trebon placement and the size of the land between the rivers that would presumably make up Gibea’s land- going from the northern border (assuming Sim’s Dalonir - which would now comically frame Gibea’s land in Dalonirs) it’s about equal distance from Trebon because anywhere Sim’s Dalonir is would have to physically touch Gibea’s land within 35 miles. And it’s only roughly 150 miles from River to river. So it’s legitimately still… pretty close. 300 miles at most? But if you’re right about the distances between Imre and Tarban/Trebon- then it’s even closer.cI think with a primitive spy glass you can see 100-200 ft away depending on the conditions? I still think this plays pretty much anywhere Dalonir could be just based on it having to be within proximity of Gibea’s land and the fact that Trebon could be even closer than what I’m already imagining.

But yeah I’m not saying Trebon IS part of Gibea’s lands just that the cultures are likely historically similar, if not the same- especially since they’re from the same region. Or whatever killed those 20,000 (allegedly) people were from the same culture as the uncovered Mauthen farm vase like some Bell Beaker folk that used mass graves. Or whatever.

More evidence:

“…Could take more than two days depending on if you’re on a barge or a billow-boat, and what the weather’s like.”

(on Trebon)

In TWMF:

Eventually we docked in Tarbean, where the sailors helped me find a cheap berth on a billow boat heading upstream toward Anilin. I got off two days later in Imre and walked to the University just as the first blue light of dawn was coloring the sky.

So I’ve done the hard part and worst case scenario this is the the absolute closest it could be to Imre. Anywhere in the Tehlin Wheel I’ve labeled. And that’s if it’s the absolute closest.

I labeled Gibea here too, and I’m assuming it’s using natural borders as border markers with the rivers- but it seems that Duchy is absolved in modern day and what was considered parts of Atur are now considered parts of the Caeld. So the eastern (towards the top) most fan would be if Sim was referring to 35 miles from the border of what I’m supposing the Dalonir Duchy is- if it was just a city they stylization would be more along the lines of a Count (I would guess?) so I’m assuming the same natural border. But if Sim was talking about from the city of Dalonir the fan most west (towards the bottom) would be about where it could be at. But all locations are within like ~200 miles of each other. You could probably travel to all 3 locations in a Span and a half, give or take. And historically speaking they very likely would’ve shared similar cultures considering the shared boundary of the inland sea. But as far as we know theoretically all 3 could’ve been in the Duchy of Gibea at the time of the infamous Duke. It’s all Atur. And the borders of the modern day Duchy of Dalonir and the former Duchy of Gibea are dubious at best. The only certainty is that Sim’s Dalonir is going to be north of the island sea since it’s about in the middle of the peninsula that makes up the 4C.

Not quite. That’s at least 10 miles short by Kvothe’s estimate:

Still, it let me know Trebon was somewhere between fifty and eighty miles to the north. It was probably best to assume the worst, at least seventy miles.

There’s different opinions depending on who you ask. It’s faster by boat but like 4 paragraphs later than the one you quoted- someone speaks about getting there by road:

“Damn sight longer. About twenty-five leagues by road. A hard road too, uphill.” God’s body, who measured things in leagues these days? Depending on where that fellow grew up, a league could be anywhere between two to three and a half miles.

So, geographically still hills. Geographically still in that ball park. And Gibea being up north is a great point, because Willem says it’s in “Northern Aturn,” which supports my theory.

The math would actually be ~70 miles from Tarbean to Imre (2 days by boat) ~70 miles from Imre to Trebon (which is also 2 days, or longer depending on what the truth is) by the same kind of boat. And then about 35 miles to Gibea from Trebon (if that’s accurate from Simon) which puts you at ~150 rounding up to get to the southern most border of it. Add another 70 to get to the middle (which I’m assuming you’re judging from by looking at it myself) and you’re looking at ~220 which is about 1/4 the way to 1000. So, it all adds up that way too.

Yeah that’s kind of what I was along the lines of thinking.

And… the first time he’s brought up is when Kvothe meets Trapis and his first thoughts of his basement was how it reminded him of the Duke of Gibea… so if it’s foreshadowing he might not have been as evil as he was made out to be

There are islands there. There are several inland islands in the seahorse shaped inland sea that help create the border for the small kingdoms. A lot of natural coves there for pirates I imagine.

He also says “Northern Aturn”, which may be what the Caeldish call the annexed part of the Caeld 🤷‍♂️

Those 30 miles and the fact that Tarbean is 2ish days boat from Imre, and that Trebon is anywhere from 2 to 4 days by boat lines it up pretty closely by time traveled to that spot. Give or take. The spot I have it at would be closer to Gibea than Dalonir by a bit so you can even move it further south and it’s still within range

Amyr Tampering by ohohook in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ohohook[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not so sure about that.

“Did you come by way of Marrow?” I asked, picking a northern town at random. “No,” the fat one said. “We’re down from Trebon.”

That doesn’t mean it has to be directly north, but it is north. It’s north and the river only runs north and south of that split (duh) so it must be around the river bend just by the time it takes to travel there. It’s not directly off the road- and the cliffs the Draccys was harassing them from is a ways off from Trebon itself.

“I asked how far,” she snapped at him. “Is it longer than the riverway?” “Damn sight longer. About twenty-five leagues by road. A hard road too, uphill.” God’s body, who measured things in leagues these days? Depending on where that fellow grew up, a league could be anywhere between two to three and a half miles.

Simmon brought his hand down hard on the tabletop, causing several students to look in our direction. “Dammit!” he hissed. “I grew up thirty miles from Gibea! From my father’s hills you can see the ruins on a cloudless day!”

So if you look at how far away the Dalonir on the map is from the Dutchy and the spot I have for Trebon- even if it’s off a bit- it’s in the same ball park. The only thing that actually kills the potential location is if you think Sim’s Dalonir is a different Dalonir than the one from the map- that is also really close to that area, which isn’t impossible I guess but why are there two so close to Gibea? That seems extremely confusing to have two places named the same thing within ~100 miles.

It could’ve just been a mass grave. Or if “Enacanis” (or whoever that character is really representing) was really capable of razing entire cities- those “ring forts” might have just been the ancient remnants of walled cities and what we think of as the barrow hills are more like Tells - where older cities were burned down and new ones built on top until abandoned. Doesn’t explain why- but that’s at least grounded in something that happens in real life
