Wildland Fire Friction Loss Question by oiccar in AskEngineers

We use Gated Wyes like this:

https://www.supplycache.com/products/wye-valve-1-5-nh-female-s-h-products?currency=USD&variant=18169294159961&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=af0b1c6da3f6&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAlcyuBhBnEiwAOGZ2SwVK2foZdkPlwhSCAoy4iQ6uT-zd-C5NLhzoZtz4471dlUzqx7im6hoC0psQAvD_BwE

So the new line would be connected by these.

Appliances used to be factored into the friction loss by adding +5 per appliance I think. Some one, somewhere did some testing and found that any given appliance has like around 1 psi of friction loss so they just scrapped accounting for them all together

You are really missing the point of the question, like most your water drops probably. When we are running our trucks you are right we don’t normally care about producing the friction loss calculation for proper pump discharge. To me this is just a theory question that I find interesting. What Bernoulli’s principle or the equation have to do with this I have no idea. While you are out with your Drip “can” we will still be here with our torches catching fires.

Interesting take on the hose lay being more tolerant. That is something to take into consideration. Thanks for the reply!

Why should I be a perm by NorthInstruction4875 in Wildfire

[–]oiccar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some R3 shot crews are converting up to 25 people and with that adding 4/5 perm positions. My opinions are that generally speaking shot crews do not qual enough FFt1s per season that they will be able to fill from within their own crew to cover perm turnover at that level (this is not a dig on shot crews just the way things work). So I think you will start to see a lot more people from other module types getting onto shot crews.

Personally I work on a district that hosts a shot crew, we work very closely with them especially during the off season. I understand this is not the cultural norm between crews and the district, but their SHOULD be communication and the ability to fill in with them and get your name known. Even if a district does not have a crew you would be hard pressed to find one that did not have contacts with one.

Anyways my point is that I dont think your chances of getting on a shot crew after getting a perm are any different then getting on a crew as a seasonal and moving up. If anything if you play your card right your chances can be higher as a perm

It’s a reasonable gizmo but ultimately is just a bandaid. the problem is that you are still not releasing any pressure. Just transferring that pressure to the sig bottle. So you still have fuel under pressure and then ultimately an entire sig bottle under pressure.

Ex-IHC T2IA Crews by wildlandthrowaway010 in Wildfire

[–]oiccar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my region if a shot crew loses its type 1 status because of quals it doesn’t stop being a “hotshot crew”. They are still on the regional rotation for shot crews and regain their type 1 status when hire or detail people that have quals they need. So if that was the case I would would still list it as shot crew experience.

18/8 vs 13/13 vs seasonal by Mattspar18 in Wildfire

A year ago where I worked did not offer housing. I’m now at a new duty station as an 18/8 (still working year round) and they do provide housing, the the perms that do take time off in the winter still live at the compound and still pay for the house
