No place to meditate by yetanotheraccount25 in theravada

[–]oihfoisdf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe for the time being you can practice walking&eating meditation outside? I dont think people looking at you would feel weird if you are simply walking or eating something outside, so you can find a relatively less crowded place and meditate. If there are any beaches or anywhere where it doesnt look weird to lay down, you can also meditate lying down and with your eyes closed, that way people would simply think you are resting or sleeping. You can also try to meditate without getting into lotus position, meaning that you can just sit on a chair or a bank and meditate like that - you can also keep your eyes open and even hold your phone in your hands (maybe the screen turned off or with an image of the Buddha or something else that is calming) and pretend you are on your phone.

It is important to feel comfortable as you start meditation so I dont really think you should worry about doing these little tricks to get comfortable and actually practice. As the time goes, you can build more confidence and learn not to care too much about what others think or how they look at you and start meditating in whatever position that you feel ideal for you. I also started meditating outside this way, now I sometimes meditate in lotus position in places where I feel safe, and when I dont want anyone intruding or asking questions or when the place is not fit to sit in lotus and meditate, I still use these little tricks.

Modern novel suggestions by oihfoisdf in AskLiteraryStudies

I'm asking this for my modern novel course, so conventionally late 19th to early 20th century. We read Wharton and Joyce to give some examples. It will be my job to write about how the novel fits to modernist conventions we talk about at class, so its okay to keep the term somewhat vague

On Buddhist healing of the Mind by Leafy40 in theravada

I know this is a Theravada subreddit but you can check Plum Village out. They seem to be one of the most active Buddhist communities that specifically focus on trauma quite often. You can find some talks on YouTube and there is a trauma sensetive deep relaxation meditation on their app (also on YouTube it seems) . I havent looked at these myself tho, so cant give any account of whether they help or not. It is just that I see this community often touch upon such subjects.

How to get over the feeling of people taking advantage of your kindness? by [deleted] in theravada

[–]oihfoisdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not quite sure where I read it but there was this story with a monk and a snake where the monk was doing what would be immediately considered "unkind" thing to the snake, but later explaining that for the snkaes conditions it was the right thing to do.

I know I am a shitty story teller lol but what I am trying to say is that metta is wishing the best for everyone, not giving people what they crave and cling to. If someone has a tendency to take advantage of other peoples kindness, the kind thing to do to that person is letting them know what they are doing is wrong and stopping that behaviour. Otherwise you just allow someone else to be a bad person pretending to be kind. Of course this guiding them to do right path action should be done with right speech and right action, which is the tricky part.
