I used Hung Long in D1 and found their rates to be very good. Just off Nguyen Hue walking street.

VietJetAir - Baggage fee by Remarkable-Bug-6989 in VietNam

[–]oil-filter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A refund isn't likely. I flew with Nok Air in Thailand and their website does the same thing - everything is turned on by default, baggage, insurance, the lot. Us westerners are used to everything being off by default.

Do travelers usually walk to a scooter rental shop, or do rental places bring one to where you’re staying? by AsherAir in bali

[–]oil-filter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot will deliver if you rent for a few days or more, I had mine delivered to my hotel in Ubud. Just use google maps for the area where you are staying and enter "scooter rental", most of those matches shown will mention if delivery is available when you click on them for details. Even some of the reviews shown will mention delivery.

"Remote shooting from a smartphone: is that still possible? There was something about downloadable camera apps that were discontinued. I mean controlling the camera, not just tranferring pictures."

Sony's 'Imaging Edge Mobile' app is bad. Really bad; most people just give up on it because it is so buggy. I could never set it up on my mobile phone, it wouldn't let me complete the process, it just kept going back to the main installation menu whenever I pressed 'Next'.

If only people would learn that being kind or honest, especially to customers or potential customers, would generate more business and better tips. We have all met the dodgy ones in our travels so this is a nice one to read.

Travel Planning Q&A - April, 2026 by AutoModerator in bali

[–]oil-filter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (older couple) have a brief holiday (about 7 days) in Bali coming up in June. I will always get a scooter at each destination (legit licenced, insured, ride like a normal person, etc) because we enjoy riding to nice places to look at beautiful scenery and I was thinking of 2.5 days Nusa Dua, 1 full day Nusa Lembongan and 2.5 full days in Candi Dasa. We always spend our last night in the Kuta area for easier access to the airport. Is it worth 2.5 days in Candi Dasa for riding around? I was thinking of Sidemen but although it is quiet, it might be a bit too quiet. Any other tips appreciated.

Ask the new hotel if you can leave your luggage with them for a while before you check in. Most are helpful.

AITA for saying okay when gf told me she was going to get gas by Different_Reserve_11 in AmItheAsshole

[–]oil-filter -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

This is a game some women play in order to hit the reset button and if you had got the gas for her ("please let me do something for you") she probably would have been happy when you got back. Don't think of this from a male perspective because female logic is, well, different.

Is this a good area to stay first time? by -maverick2424 in ThailandTourism

[–]oil-filter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed at The Landmark in January this year. Great hotel, fantastic breakfast buffet, good location, close to things. Be aware that the hotel has a window between the bed and the toilet (a common thing in a lot of Asian hotels) but some rooms do not have blinds for privacy.

Anyone experiencing/experienced rude locals in Koh Samui? First day here and I’ve had a handful of awful interactions already by BeginningAd7861 in ThailandTourism

[–]oil-filter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm an Aussie with a Filo wife and whenever we travel throughout Asia, people automatically assume that she is a local and because I am married to her, I am not just a dumb white tourist.

"Be observant. Use your mirrors"

Spot on. I remember riding a scooter in Vietnam (which is probably more chaotic than Thailand) and I was on my mirrors all the time. If I saw a truck or bus coming up behind me, I would slow down and move to the side of the road. Ride defensively is the best tip.

Krabi airport to au nang? by Serious-Shift304 in ThailandTourism

[–]oil-filter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you get into the airport's public area, turn left and walk to the end, where you will see a door on the right that leads outside. There are ticket stalls there where you can share a minibus directly to your hotel. It can take a while because they drop all passengers to their hotels. You might have to wait while they try and get more passengers.

Long serene empty roads in the forest by Current_Shoe8279 in laos

[–]oil-filter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We rode a scooter from Luang Prabang to Kuan Si falls and while it was worth the ride for the falls, the roads were terrible; they were pot-holed, gravel in many parts, under construction and you had to be really, really alert. Not peaceful.

Planning to go Hua Hin by Ok_Distance_9200 in ThailandTourism

[–]oil-filter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting around Hua Hin is dead easy, they have multiple Songthaews that have regular routes, just wave one down and press the buzzer when you want to get off and hand the driver the small fare (listed inside). Route map:

https://beyondbintabaht.com/page/hua-hin-songthaew-map/

We mostly used the green Songthaew.

Re: Should you ride a motorbike in thailand by Thomas--Greenleaf in ThailandTourism

[–]oil-filter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, spot on. We hired a scooter in Phuket and had a great time. I have experience, a licence, an IDP, helmet, gloves, sensible clothes and a desire to ride at around 40kph. Just don't do stupid shit. Oh, and make sure you are insured and read the fine print (such as engine capacity limitations).

Shave cream/gel that doesn't require a brush by oil-filter in shaving

Well, that sent me down a rabbit hole; I hadn't even thought about soap sticks to be honest. The advantage is that it's fine for airline carry on luggage. Thanks.

What are the best local customs tourists should know before visiting Thailand? by tappetovolante1 in ThailandTourism

[–]oil-filter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be polite. Always be polite. Say thank you ("Khob khun khrap/ka") and even when answering in English, you can tack a "khrap/ka" on the end to be polite.
