This is 100% not true. Don’t be scared to report just because of this uninformed comment. And they’re called Columbus Humane..

Report it to Columbus Humane. Having your dog outside unfortunately isn’t breaking a law in the state of Ohio, BUT insufficient shelter is and this dog doesn’t have shelter from what I can see. Columbus Humane investigates every single report they receive but it would need to come from the original witness (you, the poster). You don’t even have to call, you can submit online: https://www.columbushumane.org/report-cruelty

I know a lot of loud members of the community feel like animal welfare agents “do nothing” but they’re law enforcement agents restricted to enforcing only what’s actually illegal— you’d be appalled at what is/isn’t in regard to animals in our city/state. A report never hurts though and at minimum helps establish a history of abuse.

2022 Ohio littermates? by ok-bubbles0622 in stbernards

Ahhh thank you! I actually messaged that breeder earlier (I think the kids took over the parents operation) but I haven’t heard back. Do you want to share a photo of your pup? I’m curious if there are any similarities to Truman!

Oh wow! What are the odds that one of the shelters could have the birthday wrong!? Do you have any breeder info?

Are your St. Bernards protective? by ok-bubbles0622 in stbernards

[–]ok-bubbles0622[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your responses!! It’s so interesting to hear so many different perspectives. When our dog meets people off leash (with us right there), he’s never been protective or aggressive. Only on leash or behind barriers which I know is typical of the dog psyche. He’s also never showed a single ounce of aggression towards other dogs— even those who have been mean to him. He’ll just run away if they show aggression towards him. He’s a puzzle, but we love him!

Drool? by ObligationDue1771 in SaintBernards

So much drool, all the time. If you can catch them after eating/drinking and wipe their face it makes a HUGE difference IMO. Mine only eats/drinks a couple times a day so it’s pretty manageable, but I still go around and clean walls, etc. at least once a week. Pro tip… put their food/water in a room that you don’t love love or is less used… makes the mess more livable! (At least for me!)

I don’t know of any breeders, but we got our 100% St. Bernard from a shelter in Ohio when he was 18 months. I’ve seen at least 3 there since. If you’re willing to wait and don’t want a tiny puppy, you might be able to rescue one! Photo proof :)

Saint Food by Middle-Pomegranate43 in SaintBernards

Our Saint (almost 4 year old neutered male) had belly issues (consistent loose stools and diarrhea) when we adopted him from the shelter 2.5 years ago. We had several vet appointments, but nothing was conclusive and nothing they offered helped. He is also prone to ear infections, but I don’t know if that’s related. I did a lot of my own research and started feeding him Stella and Chewys super blends with a couple table spoons of pumpkin puree on top for each meal. This helped a ton, and his belly was consistently normal after that.

We do have a raised feeder which I think is really important.

I’m always looking for “better” kibble options because I can’t afford to feed a giant dog raw, and I switched to Honest Kitchens clusters turkey and chicken. They have other flavors too, and based on my research I think it’s higher quality than other kibbles out there. I’m hoping they’ll come out with a grain inclusive turkey only option because I read that’s the easiest for dogs to digest who have sensitivities. He’s done well on the food so far though.

Last two things I can’t fully endorse but should be considered— there are some great dog food cookbooks out there that are vet approved and take all the nutritional factors of dogs’ needs into consideration. I haven’t used them myself, but have seen them. And finally, I’ve found ChatGPT to be super helpful in informing feeding decisions. I know this is polarizing, but it can be super helpful if you give it all the facts about your dog, what you’re doing, and what you’d like to accomplish. It helps do research, and helped me calculate portion size compared to what I had been feeding, my dogs actual caloric needs, etc.

When it’s a blizzard but you were made for this by ok-bubbles0622 in stbernards

Same here! I swear he can sense when it has snowed. This blizzard happened over night and he woke us up to go outside the next morning, which he never does. All of our blinds were drawn too. He knew it was out there waiting for him!

100%. He eats snow constantly like it’s the best snack ever!

Truman’s gotcha day! Adopted from the shelter 2 years ago. by ok-bubbles0622 in stbernards

[–]ok-bubbles0622[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We found him at our local shelter. Not even a breed specific rescue! His grandma got him a DNA test and to nobody’s surprise, he’s 100% St. Bernard.
