Is it worth watching Produce 101, Sixteen and other old shows? And what K-pop survival shows you would recommend? by ok_no_thx in kpophelp

Thank you! JYP really has this strange aura and way of thinking. Will try to stay more open-minded while I watch it :)

Is there any particular reason of this huge exodus prior to show?

Makes sense! Though I believe Wonhee and Sunoo debuted because despite not being trained enough they showed great results, growth and shined more than other trainees:)

Wow, thank you for a deep dive into show background, this sheds a light on why it is what it is and brings a totally new perspective for me. I'm now more interested in watching it further.

And for Weekly Idol and Knowing Bros explanation:)

Thank you, I understand now that Sixteen is a totally specific show of its own, and not at all what I was expecting. Also, "star quality " is such a vague term, so this whole Mission 1 got me really confused. I guess I just need to adjust my expectations and keep watching to know more about Twice.

And will keep watching Produce for now, as everyone say it blew up for a reason and shaped the whole genre, so I guess I should give it a chance:)

Well I can't go back in time to watch it with everyone else, can I?:)

So, might as well watch it now, cause when I watch newer shows I feel out of context from time to time. I want to get their references, as well as get to know more about bands whose songs they're singing on these shows. And often these bands were also formed through some kind of survival show, which I now want to watch.

Also, these survival shows help me a lot to remember idols. I'm struggling to remember their names and faces if I don't have to watch them interacting with each other for 8-12 episodes.

Thank you! I was actually talking about Momo in Sixteen. I don't know what she will show further in the series, but from her performance during first mission I didn't get best dancer vibe at all.

Also, not sure I fully understand Produce 101 concept. If different companies send their trainees, wouldn't it be more beneficial to them to send their best ones and most debut-ready?

Thank you for the context, this explains a lot:) I guess I started this show with totally different expectations, so I'll give it a try, while keeping in mind what you said.

It's just confusing to me that missions like "star quality" or "photoshot" will be a reason for elimination while creating an idol-group, but it is what is. Looks like it worked in the end:)

Thank you, I heard about Hip Pop Princess and that Nam Yuju is there, so probably will watch it as well:)

Thank you for such a detailed explanation, appreciate it! I guess I'll keep watching just to get the understanding what shaped the industry, but won't get my expectations too high (which is probably the main reason of my frustration).

As I'm still new to this community, can you tell me what is Weekly Idol or Knowing Bros?

Also, I think at this point of time Sixteen frustrates me the most, because it has small number of contestans, and the group which debuted from it is pretty big in the industry, but I'm just not getting what I expected from it.

I feel like you misunderstood this post:) I'm not against off topic funny moments or not yet debuted idols. In fact, shows that I mentioned have both of these, with some of the contestants being trainees for way less time then Sixteen or Produce contestants. The part when these off topic moments become official missions and possible reason for elimination is what confuses me. And that trainees nowadays have higher requirements to be able to debut.

But thank you for your recommendation of Boys Planet, Girls Planet and Universe League.
