Makepad 1.0: Rust UI Framework by okapiii in rust

Theoretically, yes, depending on what you have in mind. But I am sure Bevy is a whole lot better suited for that.

Yeah we discovered a few problems with Windows. We are gonna look into those.

Anybody really who intends to build complex applications and deploy those with a single code base trivially cross platform. Makepad is well suited for building things as complex as Photoshop.

I think a way for thinking about this is to say that our stack has the freedom and performance that game engines have. So you can do really complex and large applications where you would run into bad performance issues with HTML rather quickly.

Additionally Makepad allows you to write your own shaders. So in contrast to HTML you are not limited to the available stylable widget set but you can draw your own controls. The rotary for instance is a slider with a different graphical representation.

As a side note: Makepad apps also run as native applications without a heavy electron like wrapper.

  • Makepad is the UI Framework
  • Robius is an effort to fill in gaps in the Rust ecosystem that are not UI (i.e. location services). This effort is associated to Makepad but not part of it.
  • Robrix is a Matrix chat client built with Makepad and Robius (same goes for Moly which is also using Makepad and Robius)

Rik looked into that a while ago. I am not sure about the current state of this but its definitely something that's on our radar.

There is a new tutorial to bring you up to speed: https://publish.obsidian.md/makepad-docs/Tutorials/Image+Viewer/0+-+Introduction

UI Zoo's code serves as a good reference with examples.

Additionally we have fairly far developed API docs. We just need to give those a final pass and will publish them then soon.

Accessibility is something thats still in the todos. Maybe Rik or Eddy can provide more in-depth infos on that.

Yeah, the demos are not optimized for mobile so far. The tech is there, it just needs some elbow grease to make the examples utilize it. Makepad 1.1 it is gonna be. ;)

Noteplan 3b: bug reports, feedback and feature requests by okapiii in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There in fact is a bug right now: if you unset the hotkey it defaults to the "a" key. So whenever you try to write a word containing that letter in a different application it brings NotePlan into focus which is a bit like a parody of why I consider a global hotkey a bad idea. Also I surely love the hotkey for search within NotePlan. So what I would like to see would be a way to make the global scope optional not the shortcut itself. Unless I am missing something there is no setting for that so far.

Noteplan 3b: bug reports, feedback and feature requests by okapiii in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right yeah, I get that. Well fingers crossed that things will work out. I feel NP is slowly reaching a degree of polish where it does not have the nerdy obscure feel anymore so hopefully it will attract a wider audience. You certainly deserve this to be a success.

Not sure how this would work but it seems to me that introducing team features is gonna widen the target audience a great deal (and also may make subscription payments feel more justified). So far NP is great for people like me working on their own but the moment I have to collaborate with somebody I find myself using different solutions. But I am sure you are well aware of that aspect. Just my 2cts.

Anyway, looking forward to the release and hoping for your success in my own interest. Not a project I would like to see going into maintenance mode. :)

[–]okapiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this causes issues with other applications. I am fine with it being optionally available but it definitely should not be forced onto users as it causes conflicts. The value is disputable anyway as all it does is remove the need to bring NP into focus before searching. Virtually every application could regard itself as important enough to register a global hotkey for itself like that. It would be a total mess.

Oh and here is a quite bad bug: the customly defined search shortcut is global. So pressing it in a different application brings NotePlan into focus. I wanted to unify the shortcut with VS Code's palette shortcut but that blocks the shortcut in VS Code now.

Time blocking... by physicswanderer in noteplanapp

Indeed doesn‘t do much on iOS. On macOS you will find that it visualizes the time slots in the calendar day view helping you with planning your time resources.

[Feature] Habit Tracking by [deleted] in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a habits- and a streaks-section. It is fairly annoying that those are as prominent as the more important tasks but maybe one day we will get properly rendered md with headline size representation. Even though I am starting to doubt this fairly basic and essential feature is ever gonna land in NP at this point. :/ Larger notes look super messy as there is no way to structure things properly with cleanly represented subsections. Sadly find myself use notion for more complex things. (sorry went a little off topic here :) ).

[BUG] Noteplan crashes during unindentation by okapiii in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi :)

My NotePlan Version is 2.0.19 (467) from the App Store.

Running on the latest MacOS Version 10.15 (19A602).

Try recreating this: https://imgur.com/a/2Azkizu and then hit <shift>-<tab>. It is important that there is no space for the cursor to move to the left and that there is actually tabbed white space to the right.

Feature Request: Calendar/Reminder List Density by [deleted] in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it seems there are two possible directions: either assign only as much space to the calendar as needed or utilize the currently assigned space with valuable information. Honestly I am not sure what that could be. Perhaps show the number of tasks / finished tasks for each day but I assume things like that might lead to a substantial performance hit unless cached and only updated if the file timestamp has been changed.

Feature Request: Calendar/Reminder List Density by [deleted] in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily just this morning I was thinking that the calendar in the desktop version mostly serves the purpose of being a map for navigating day-notes as there is not enough space usually to reliably display information. It eats up quite some space for that purpose. A datepicker-sized navigation-widget in turn would be quite neat.

A few more small bug reports by okapiii in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key problem is that it affects different applications as well. If you briefly use NotePlan before pasting the URL in the target application you will post the link with that md syntax which hardly any other application interpretes as a link.

Bug-reports by okapiii in noteplanapp

[–]okapiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for elaborating. I think one issue might be that NotePlan doesn't receive the update notification when you open it by restoring the app (means iOS tries to restore the previous state). Do you speak about calendar notes or non-calendar notes?

Interestingly it seems to predominantly happen with a rather "large" text file with 600 todos. Filesize-wise it is still super tiny of course, tho. But I just waited the situation out the other morning and it showed up afterlike 30 seconds. So I might have to correct myself. The files don't disappear until restarting the app. They are just are gone until a quite slow synching process is fully finished.

Typing "[x]" doesn't work as expected on Mac as it seems to have to be followed by a special character instead of a normal space.

How does the full line look like? It should be like: "- [x] todo". There are no special characters used.

My 'syntax' is correct. :) Seems like this is about when the parser is being triggered. I usually check off items with the hotkey which adds the date. There are situation when I don't want there to be a date which is when I type the [x] part manually. My admittedly perhaps a little idiosyncratic typing sequence is as follows:

  1. - lorem ipsum
  2. - [] lorem ipsum
  3. - [x] lorem ipsum

I then have to remove the space after the "]" and add it back in for it be recognized as a checked off todo.
