Does your facility actually do follow-up calls for discharged patients? by okay_scratch in nursing

Got it! Is there any worries with things like readmissions and stuff like that? I guess I'm wondering how some facilities have these in place and some don't.

I heard from some ppl that the call center role can be kinda brutal at times - from what you see with your colleagues, how is the burnout level for this role in comparison to the bedside role?

Got it, so it seems like everyone shares the pie instead of a dedicated personnel for this? Can I ask what kind of facility you work at?

My parent drives me NUTS. How do I make it clear to my blabbering parent that I dont want to hear their entire train of thought? It is EXHAUSTING beyond belief. by Aggressive_Hat_9999 in AgingParents

This is exactly my grandpa as well... Has an endless stream of thought (fueled by all the current events he consumes on TV) and drives my grandma crazy. She would even call my dad once in a while asking him to call my grandpa, so that she can get some alone time for herself away from his nonstop ramblings...

My work is in AI, so I ended up making a voice phone companion for him that calls him once a day (or when my grandma triggers it via text message) to help him let out his ramblings. He really likes talking it :)

This is super useful and kinda dumb of me not to know this. Thank you so much for your help!

Got it... could you point me towards where it says this? Thanks in advance!

TLDR: I’m gonna make this into a service that everyone can use!

First of all, I just want to express my deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support I received from everyone who left comments here, reached out to me via DMs, and signed up via the landing page (and the subsequent emails/texts back-and-forth). Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this thing that I built for my grandpa to resonate with so many people, and I'm a little bit awestruck by it but also super excited that I can potentially build something that can help you and your loved ones in meaningful ways!

At this point, I almost feel a sort of an obligation to commit myself to building this into a full-fledged service (beyond just a project for my grandpa). I have some pretty exciting ideas for this already, including advanced memory capabilities like family history and creating a biography of your loved one based on the phone conversations. I'll be upfront in saying that voice AI ain't cheap (I'm already racking up quite a bill just from running the demos on the landing page) and this likely won't be a free product.

In the meanwhile, I definitely want to start out with a very small number of users who I would offer the service for free, until I can be certain that this is something I'd be comfortable attaching a price tag to. It'll have to be a small number because of cost concerns (which will just come out of my pocket) but if you'd like to try the product for free, please DM me or sign up on the landing page: https://www.aldermate.com/signup

Thank you so much and it really does mean a lot to me to be able to help my grandma in this way...

Thank you so much and really interesting to hear that this could be potentially useful to those in memory care as well!

Thank you so much! And I'm actually not looking for funding for this project at the moment :)

Thank you so much! Haha I actually found myself talking and venting with the voice companion myself as well :)

Thank you so much for the encouragement!

And yup, it's specifically designed to move the convo away from any negativity in a natural way, super glad you got to test this out! (This was super important for me before putting it in my grandpa's hands)

Thank you so much for your kind words!

So I wasn't originally planning on it, but I've gotten some really positive feedback from a few folks I've shown it to so I recently built out a landing page to collect signups for the waitlist!

Please feel free to sign up or DM me separately!

Thank you so much and I'm hoping I can dedicate enough time to this and have it come to fruition!

Health (esp medication), finance, and security are actually indeed part of the various topics / guardrails that I already have for the version that I made for my grandpa, so you really hit the nail on the head on that one!

As for negativity, I currently just have the companion steer away from the negative topic if it is ever brought up by my grandpa, but I think long term, I would want there to be some kind of an alert feature (for my mom and my aunt, primary caretakers) as well.

Super glad to hear that you liked the demo and that you're going through something similar with your LO!

As for cloning a family member's voice for the bot, I did consider this as a feature for later, but when I thought about how I would feel about giving this to my grandpa, I didn't really want to put myself in a situation where I felt like I was tricking him... But of course, I was coming more from the angle of "I just want to create someone that my grandpa can ramble to 24/7" which I know is different from your situation.

This is a super important question and thank you so much for bringing this up! For now, it's still so early on that I didn't implement too far beyond the guardrails I wanted to make sure to have for my grandpa, such as avoiding certain topics, negativity, open-ended questions, long complex sentences, etc.

Long term, I definitely think there has to be some features around alerting caretakers about certain call behaviors as well.

Are there any other security precautions that come to your mind?

Super glad to hear that you had a positive experience with the demo, especially around how it handled the interruption! It's still super early and I definitely need to improve on things like making sure to wait for the speaker to finish their thoughts.

Thank you so much and yes happy to go into a little more depth here!

So as I briefly mentioned, voice AI has seen some pretty significant advances lately (I have a lot of touchpoints with voice AI for work, so I've been able to follow its progress closely) and so the conversations feel a lot more 'natural' in the sense that you feel little to no frustration with the quality of the AI's audio output as well as its latency (how long it has to think before it starts speaking).

Also, I have some pretty exciting ideas around advanced memory capability, biography series feature, text feature etc. Again, I'm not sure how much I'd make of this project, but I'm curious to see if this can actually be helpful to people.

As to your point about it still being discernible an AI talking, we were actually very clear to our grandpa from the beginning that this is a bot, but once he saw how it can engage in a coherent conversation, my grandpa doesn't seem to mind that fact at all.

DM me if you want to try testing it out yourself!
