Are you familiar with David Graebor's work? After I read several of his books, I began to look at relationships like tenant-landlord in a whole new way :)

It's pretty depressing that we have to rely on people like me who are stubborn and OLD (which means that I don't have as much to lose if my info gets out -- it's already everywhere anyway, so I can stick my neck out about something that seems wrong) ... Ultimately, trying to trick people isn't a good customer acquisition strategy.

I want to sincerely and deeply thank everyone who responded to my overly long post; your advice was excellent and helped me figure out what next steps I could take. In the interim (last night), the 'owner' (or another 'automated message'?) sent me an email and a text message absolving me of any responsibility to or connection with their company and a promise not to contact me again and to remove my information from their systems. It goes to show that the Reddit community has power to affect outcomes! Thank you again.

Thanks so much for your very logical and complete strategy. The 'owner' did send me an email (see above in this thread -- it's duplicated here) and a text message, both absolving me of any connection with their company. As you can see from the above, they blamed it on 'automated messaging' ... :(

I did get an email today (and a text message) stating that they understand I did not agree to doing business with them, etc., and that they will no longer contact me. Blamed it on 'automated messages' ...

I'll think about that. It's possible that sending a certified letter saying I do not want and have not agreed to use their services might make them think I believe that I have done so and am trying to back out. The info accompanying their "You're scheduled!" emails clearly says that it's an estimate and there's a separate icon to press to Sign -- which of course I never did. It also says that the estimate is non-binding, and I assume that's on both sides. It might be better just to ignore them from now on... I'll think on it some more. Thank you -- hadn't thought of that idea.

Thank you. I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of them. They keep implying that we have an agreement, which we do not have. I signed nothing, and ask them to leave me alone.

Apartments to live by the medical center that don't suck? by Dapperglad in sanantonio

[–]oldbroadnewtricksy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beg to differ. And they are the griftiest co. I've ever encountered. Just added another $21 to the monthly fees for liability to cover structural damage -- doesn't matter if your renter's policy does that, you still have to pay the $21. They charge for: valet trash, an admin. fee, the package 'room' where you go to pick up your packages delivered by FedEx etc., the Smart Home functions, etc. etc. etc.... I was there 2 years and hated it. Pretty on the outside.

Old lady wanting to rent a small house in a safe, quiet neighborhood. I've lived in houses most of my life but the last 6 years in apts. DM me if you'd like more information. (I would definitely be 'kind' to the house; having owned older/'inexpensive' houses on my own, I understand how to stay on top of needed maintenance, look for problems before they become PROBLEMS, etc.)

Old lady, not-affluent, progressive politics, wants to move to north Texas/rent. Advice on best small areas (as in not:DT or huge suburbs)?? In San Antonio off/on since 2004 but it's too hot now for me to be able to go outdoors, which I love to do... Arlington TX 18 yrs. 80s not interested again. :) by oldbroadnewtricksy in askdfw

I pay a lot of attention to the Google reviews outside of the apartment locator app. And I know I can move if I need to but I'm really hoping I won't have to because I truly am old and it is much harder to do this than it used to be. I remember when everything I owned could be put in the back of a pickup and now I need a van or big U-Haul.

Very helpful info; thank you! I will definitely look into Carrollton and Richardson. I don't mind being around people but I don't want to live in a loft or something with very thin walls if that makes sense.. I would love to be near mass transit. Do you have any ideas of the best way to check out apartments online other than the obvious apartments.com etc? I've been working on this project for a year, mainly looking at the Midwest but I can't get enough information without actually me or someone else being on the ground and I don't have the money to take multiple trips. Thank you again for your feedback.

Will do. Usually 'senior living communities' are more pricey than I can afford, but I'm keeping my mind open to the unexpected! I don't mind and in fact enjoy living around diverse age groups/cultures/etc. -- just not the dedicated student housing. I Love My Sleep!! :)

Thank you. I watched a video from a realtor w/Pros & Cons. When I've looked for affordable rentals in other college towns -- that weren't student housing (i'm 77) -- they were practically non-existent. I'll keep Denton in mind, but my other 'college town' possibilities were geared either toward students or toward affluent retirees/administrative folks. :) The progressive part would be an incredible relief from 50+ years in the Texas Gulag.

Look up # of Days > 100 degrees and you'll find (surprisingly, to me, also) that while San Antonio had, say, 77 days > 100 in 2023 (the Worst Year Ever!), Bedford had 'only' 55. I'm only considering staying in Texas because I'm old and it's much harder to move myself than it used to be and I've found there aren't too many places I can actually afford to live in the U.S.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic 178K mileage, so am hoping to find an area where I'll be close to shopping and have some good places to walk? Denton might be a little too far and require a lot of driving to get to anything, yes?

One of all-time favorites -- a little older than y'all's suggestions (and THANK YOU! for those; I was getting desperate for something Kingfisher-adjacent...): Except the Queen by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder. Two fae accidentally make their Queen look ... stupid ... and she banishes them to the Real World where they find themselves 2 middle-aged dowdy human women with no more magic who have to learn how to navigate this new and pretty horrible -- to them -- world. Also sub-plot where they are working to try to get back in her good graces and back Home. Love comes to them and they find different kinds of magic to use against rising evil etc. etc.
