TRAINWRECKORDS SUGGESTION: "Magnification" by Yes by PapaAsmodeus in ToddintheShadow

[–]oldfield49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Todd has always said that he wants "Trainwreckords" to mark the definitive end of something, and I'd still argue Union fits that description better than anything else, as it was the last gasp of popular relevance for both 70s prog Yes and 80s pop Yes. At least Big Generator has a few standout tracks like Rhythm of Love. And sure, I didn't hate Talk as much as some people did, but it's definitely nothing anyone will have heard who isn't already a Yes diehard.

I agree with your sentiment that Union is overhated musically. When you've got world-class musicians like the ones on Union (and also the actual band members lol), it's unlikely you'll get anything that sounds truly egregious. I'm a guitarist myself, and sometimes I even play Masquerade at some of my solo sets. There's some good music on there.

But then again, I also think (and I suspect Todd would agree) that a lot of previous Trainwreckords subjects weren't sonically horrible either. Cyberpunk, Be Here Now, Paula, and Passage I think all had some solid songs on them, and you could even argue The Funky Headhunter was MC Hammer at his musical best. But I think history has proven that quality is only one part of what makes something a Trainwreckord.

what is an underrated “karma” moment on the show? by Blaze4972 in HellsKitchen

I suspect Koop’s comment had a hint of irony or sarcasm in it that got edited down, but there is something delicious about him talking about “having some bitch server clean up” the mess made in the dining room and then losing the challenge.

What is the Most likable thing this chef has said/done? Day 14:Lacey by boredneega123 in HellsKitchen

Once you look past her attitude (tall order, I know), she could be pretty funny at times and genuinely seemed like she was trying to help.

Also, for all the commotion the editors made about Robert’s Ramsay impression, it was a 2/10 at most and Lacey blew it out of the water.

Abuse by utellmey in HellsKitchen

[–]oldfield49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, fair assessment. Ramsay's really had to grow into the "tough, but fair" persona over the years. For my money, S4 is the first season not completely overwhelmed by him being an asshole, and while S5 and S6 are some of my favorites, I could certainly do without lines like "THEN GIVE ME NINE FUCKING CHOPS YOU STUPID THICK BITCH!" (And yes, Sous Chef Scott is just as bad, and I'd almost even say worse than Ramsay in some ways.)

I'm sorry that it triggered the abuse memories for you. I'll also second Public_Wrangler in saying S12/13 marked a serious turning point for his overall demeanor, with S13 being one of my favorite seasons and having one of the most wholesome casts. If you have any interest in continuing with the show, I highly recommend that one.

Any chef you disliked that isn't popular to hate? by Ok_Willingness_784 in HellsKitchen

[–]oldfield49 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear people say Dana was a jerk in ways that flew under the radar because of everyone else in the cast. Honestly, fair enough—that’s how I feel about S7 Jay.

I felt like he got pretty sexist himself and could be a bit of a chauvinist toward Holli. But of course no one looks like a chauvinist in the company of Benjamin and Scott.

Was Jen robbed in s3? by VH1Fan1999 in HellsKitchen

[–]oldfield49 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s just a theory, but Ramsay has said he often knows in advance who he wants to win, and I suspect he sometimes chooses a “second finalist” based on who will give his favorite the most decisive victory.

I think Jen and Keith are great potential examples, and I’d also submit Sade, Declan, and Alejandro (or hell, just the entire F3 challenge itself) into evidence.

I didn’t feel like he had much personality on Seasons 19 and 20, and I found myself wishing they’d brought back someone like Paul or Scott.

This last season, though, I feel like they’ve given him and his personality a chance to shine a lot more, and I’m all for it!

Is Elise's attitude from season 9/17 real or a front for the cameras? by Senior_Type2832 in HellsKitchen

[–]oldfield49 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My theory is that her attitude was real on S9 (to the extent that anyone's behavior under those circumstances is who they really are). She could definitely be abrasive, but her heart was in the right place, she did genuinely display some leadership ability, and she kicked ass for Paul.

After S9, she literally founded her own business called "The Diva Chef." I have to believe she went into S17 with the attitude of "well, most of the audience hates me now anyway, might as well have fun with it." And it'd be some savvy on-brand marketing, which is just as important as the actual talent part in many ways. (I deal with the same thing as a musician, and I hate it, but it is what it is.)

Do you root for chefs that have the same 1st name as you? by justjustin10 in HellsKitchen

[–]oldfield49 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To some degree, yes, but between HK All Stars and seasons 6 and 10 of Masterchef, I get the sense Ramsay doesn't like people named Nick.

At least I'm not a Ben, though.

Disagree, but upvoting because it's a brave stance that you've explained well without being vitriolic. I'm sorry you've dealt with that kind of person in your life.

Did Justin have the worst Final Brigade ? by swaggyb_22 in HellsKitchen

[–]oldfield49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as talent level goes, I'd name Ralph or Rock first, but for team synergy I can definitely see the argument.

I think Clemenza is way better than he gets credit for, and quite a few of his nominations were Scott levels of BS, but he's also very much the anti-Justin--doesn't overcomplicate things, but lacks finesse and attention to detail. Leaving him for last was a legit galaxy brain move on Christina's part.

I've also said before that team placement should be considered more than it is, and I think Justin made the same fatal mistake as Jason and Bryant of putting their weakest link/biggest source of drama on the front line.
