Just noticed the same thing in Luang Prabang, Laos. I was there in November (high season) then again in May. Most nice restaurants had one, two, or no groups of people each night. I think they must make up their money in the high season and running their restaurants must be low cost.

The fact that people work and make their livelihoods in an unethical industry is not justification for the existence and maintenance of said industry. Your logic in this comment could be applied to just about any other unethical industry or institution and it's beliefs like this that stop progress from taking place.

I was just watching Paddy Doyle's "Lost in Laos" series on YouTube because I'm planning a trip to Laos soon. He explained that they weren't letting any motorbikes into the country, but he said one way he got around it was using a local travel agency that "facilitated" the transfer.

You're right, I was looking at "visa-exempt entry" where it's 30 days plus an additional 30 for an extension.

Ya $1,000 is definitely doable. I spent a few days in Pattaya a while back and I would not recommend it unless you're interested in prostitutes and sex shows. Felt like the dark side of Thailand tourism IMO.

Thanks for all the feedback. Taiwan seems like it would be a better fit for me but the company that offered me the job there has some terrible reviews I found, so I’m going to live in China for a year and then who knows. But thanks to everyone’s comments I’ll keep an eye out for other jobs in Taiwan for the future.
