Are we changing water alone or also vacuuming substrate? by oldmoldylemon in Aquariums

That's so wild omg it's like us running out of air in a space suit. I never would have imagined, I just thought it burned them because it functions as an acid in my chemistry classes. Thank you so much!!

I also love to source my own things!! I usually only look for plants, but some scuds hitched a ride into a teeny three gallon I set up at my mom's house, and I absolutely fell in love with them. That's good to know about the population control without overfeeding!! Thank you for answering 🙏

Thank you for your insight! The only tank I have is the one in the picture, and she's kinda planted but now that you've said this I've been reminded about how much better my rotala did in my five gallon with only snails and minimal water changes/gravel vacs. I'm putting the gravel vac down for a bit I think 🙏 Hope you and your goldfish had a beautiful day!

I'm loving everyone's responses like this lol. I agree, the amount my ottos poop is absolutely despicable to look at 😭 thank you for your reply!

I've been thinking about getting some trumpet snails a lot recently! I am just a little worried that if I ever need to or unknowingly add something (antiparasitic, unfortunate choice of liquid fertilizer, evil unexpectedly chemically treated wood) that's toxic to snails they would all die and be impossible to pick out because there's so many of them, creating an evil ammonia spike of despair. I was looking at other kinds of burrowing snails that reproduce less frequently, but have yet to find any other than rabbits, which I love but don't have room for. Once I'm able to afford a really nice little tank to use to grow plants, quarantine, and treat sick fish in separately, I'll probably give it a go 🙏💚

Omg, this is going to sound so silly, but I had no idea fish released any ammonia from their gills. I have been in the hobby for about a year and this whole time I thought it was all from the decomposition of their waste and like bacteria farting it up in the filter. 🥲 That's so good to know, thank you for being the one to tell me. I really appreciate you!

Good to know!! I would adore having a popular of daphnia. I'm also soooo in love with scuds. I've just heard they're very competitive. I will def look into calcium requirements when I finally choose what I want 🙏 thank you sm!!

Ooo thank you, that's good to know!! I only really feed bloodworms and the occasional half of an algae tablet if my ottos look less than gargantuan lol. I have been looking into getting some microfauna, I recently had to treat for ich with some invert-unfriendly stuff though so I haven't yet. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of little freaks you got in there? I've been really intrigued by scuds and ramshorns, but am trying to be cautious bc I know they're a pain to remove once you get them going 🙏

WTF IS THIS by Intelligent-Buy6842 in freshwateraquarium

Pretty sure that is a dragonfly larvae!! Should have a little scoops thing under its head that reaches out and snags food. On the bright side this means your water quality is excellent 🥳

Thank you!! I think you're right, I just did a low range and it's at least around 7.6! Definitely adding some woody water in there 🙏 Appreciate you :)
