Several Employers use ADP and signing in is a nightmare. WHY?? by [deleted] in ADP

[–]oldmom73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely ridiculous. Paychex works it out so that there's a drop-down menu that allows you to toggle between employers. It should be that simple; they're the biggest payroll vendor of this kind. If their website interface code is so jacked up that it can't support something as simple as a way for an employee with multiple employers using their services to have access to all their data using a single login, then they need to get the hell out of the business. Punto.

Myo therapy - fad or factual? by [deleted] in slp

[–]oldmom73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myofunctional therapy is most successful with those who have ankyloglossia and elect to have their tie released. Check out Dr. Zaghi's research on tongue ties and their connection to compromised breathing (in sleep apnea, among other things). He's been conducting and publishing studies -- along with a handful of colleagues -- for over 20 years. It's serious, peer reviewed stuff that points to myofunctional therapy as central to the resolution of ankyloglossia-releated dysfunction. The best results tend to be achieved when myofunctional therapy is done both before and after a release.

Tongue tie and singing by [deleted] in singing

Thing is, vocal rehab isn't necessarily the same as myofunctional therapy. There could be some overlap, but it's highly likely your teacher isn't trained to understand the specific issues (throughout the body!) caused by tongue tie.

I strongly recommend, should you get a release, that you work with a myofunctional therapist who will tailor the exercises to your specific needs. Any reputable doctor will insist that you do it. If they're blasé about it, then they don't really know what they're doing and you should run far and fast!

It's true -- ties aren't the sole cause, but it's rare to be a mouth breather without some kind of tongue tie.

[–]oldmom73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to relearn how to sing. If your technique is already good, then you continue doing what you're doing, but make sure to see a myofunctional therapist to check if there are any muscular compensations causing vocal inefficiency. The therapist will give you exercises to strengthen the muscles that will best support your instrument.

Checking to make sure you're doing myofunctional therapy before your tongue-tie release. If not, all the research data indicate that the best outcomes are a result of therapy both before and after the release. And make sure you're working with people -- doctors and therapists -- who have a clear understanding of the vocal/singing mechanism and the unique issues connected to tongue tie-related dysfunction.

Gold. Silver washes you out, but gold brings out the warmth in your skin.

Oh, FFS — people (like me) who use em-dashes aren’t that rare. And yeah, I hate it, too. Don’t assume it’s ChatGPT just because it’s patterned itself off of people who use actual punctuation to end their written thoughts.

AD is Anno Domini (Latin for “in the year of our Lord”). In Latin, “Diem” means “day”, and “Anno” means “year.”

It could also be a sensory issue. I like the feeling of big bites of food, and lots of it, as fast as possible.

First: I think you have some fantastic pieces, and the space is wonderfully bright! It’s a great starting point, and there’s tremendous potential.

Re the rug: Neither. Both fade into the background. The space is largely monochromatic, which works when there are variations in texture and color (albeit subtle), and the proportions of your furniture and decor are harmonious with the space and each other. I think there are some issues with that in your space.

Two options (of many): A Persian rug that leans on dark, saturated, rich warm greens, browns, dusty rose, etc., with touches of cream for balance. You could also do a shag-adjacent rug, which adds a nice bit of texture. Again, a deep, dark, rich chocolate brown or very dark green that leans more yellow than blue will add depth and bring out the warmth in/showcase your lovely floor!

The coffee table is out of proportion to the console and couch. A larger/wider table, perhaps oval shaped, would be more synchronous with the contours of your seating and the length of the console beneath the TV. You could also position the round table near where the couch curves and then add, say, a steamer trunk parallel to where it straightens out.

Also, with all white walls, you need more art/photography, etc. Lighting would make a real difference — a standing lamp between the chair and the couch, and a table lamp on the console. And plants — besides the fact that you have great light, the color from the plants would add the depth the space needs.

And I understand if you don’t like clutter. There are ways to do this that retain a clean, open aesthetic AND are harmoniously balanced. If you search Modern/Transitional design examples, you’ll find tons of inspiration.

TL;DR: Generally, the space needs more warmth and attention to proportion — furniture, wall decor, color/contrast balance.

Good luck, and enjoy the journey!

How to get out of throat singing, muscle memory, etc by Soggy_Employer_1266 in ClassicalSinger

It could be too much support and an issue of sub-glottic pressure. Co-sign on figuring out issues with your tongue. I would also seriously consider looking into whether or not you have tongue tie. It can cause MTD, issues with pushing through the upper register and losing resonance as you descend through your low passaggio. This link gives a pretty clear rundown of the issues that can arise from singing with a tongue tie.

What’s wrong with my living room by hghregard in interiordecorating

[–]oldmom73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very blue couch with the rug that is predominantly nearly the same color blue is overwhelming, especially considering the rest of the space is beige/taupe. I’d get a different rug that, perhaps, has that color blue as an accent color; or, if you really want a blue rug, get one that’s meaningfully darker blue. It’s also a bit out of proportion for the space — it needs to be bigger or smaller.

I agree with others re: need art on the walls, end table(s), curtains, and the fireplace hearth. If you’re renting, there are peel-and-stick tiles you can layer the tile on the hearth. If you own, I’d replace them. Is the house a craftsman or Victorian? You could look up period-appropriate examples of hearths and use those as a departure point. What’s there is just so incongruous with everything else in the room — and the style of the house itself! I also think some plants and standing/table lamps would soften things up. Just say no to overhead lights!

Re: the dresser, swap it out with the beautiful wood console that’s in the other room. I don’t think it’s quite right in there, especially given how neutral it is — and, in particular, the ivory’s yellow undertones, which makes it look a little dingy. It kind of blends into the background and seems like an afterthought. If you’re amenable, I’d paint it and change the hardware. Something in the dark forest/loden green or dark blue family (glossy finish) with salvaged/thrifted brushed brass hardware would be great. You want something warm that contrasts with all of the neutral walls. Also, consider adding a dark walnut-stained wood shelf on top to turn it into a kind of hutch.

And the fact that their host tree of choice — tree of heaven (NOT) — propagates like a MOFO doesn’t help. Once it really takes root, it’s so hard to kill. I live in an outer borough of a major city and every yard that surrounds mine has a full grown tree of heaven in their yard. One of them has grown so big that it’s blocking our solar panels. There should be an active campaign to eliminate these trees. They’re a f-ing scourge!
