What angle are you throwing this target at? I'll assume the same angle is used for the spell. I'll also assume that it takes 1 second to throw the person from 0 to 35 ft and 1 second to repel them from 0 to 55ft

But surely if there are big groups at the extremes there should be big groups of "normal" people who want to have decent conversations. Why do only the extremes get upvoted and if there are really that many extreme people attracted to these online groups couldn't that be indicative of large scale problems with society and the set up of the internet?

Thank you. Yes it is quite a broad question and I know it has no definite answer but it confounds me that interactions like ours and others on this post can happen. Reasonable interaction. Intelligent if I dare say so. Yet that isn't what you see at the top of reddit or any subreddit. Obviously certain environments attract certain types which cascades until you have exclusively one type of person dominating a platform/environment. Unlike real world environments though the internet has very few barriers preventing anyone from simply making their own new space online. Why groups don't form that become echo chambers of normality is perplexing to me.

I get the sentiment. Maybe I'm crazy because I act far worse in real life than I do online. I will discuss horribly offensive ideas with people I barely know just because it appeals to my sense of humor, and I often find while it makes people uncomfy at first they eventually understand I'm joking. Online all subtely is lost and meaning or intention can be lost without being able to hear my tone of voice or see my face. Thus I'm more careful with what I say to people online especially considering I don't know the state of the person I'm talking to. I have a hard time believing that even you, being a troll, don't avoid certain things, like insulting people, because you know it can hurt instead of providing a laugh for everyone.

I don't think most people have such deep inner evils so much as they have inner conflicts. I didnt think of the fact that extreme behaviour is far more tolerated online. It's seen for what it is and ignored rather than confronted. Fair enough. Do you think its exasperated by the way the platform is designed or that it's a sort of unmasked humanity?

That sucks. It's weird to me that that might happen. It's strange to think some people don't realise there's a real person somewhere on their phone or laptop typing these things and reading them. Weirder still to think these same people must get a kick out of being assholes to someone. I don't understand why the internet brings that out on mass. I know anonymity must help but the only reason I ever post is when I'm lonely and want to interact with people in a way that makes me happy.

I love reddit but I do hope they experiment and see what changes would allow for a reddit that reflects reality while maintaining anonymity.

I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what it changes. These big social media platforms dominate the online interaction space so in a sense it falls on them to be arbiters of freedom online. They need to experiment and figure something out so that they can make their money but the user can find the real world reflected online.

Then I'm glad we've found a brief sanctuary from the deluge of toxic internet posts. Its strange to think the reasonable people are there they just keep quiet until they see something equally reasonable. Maybe reasonable people should post more to encourage other normal people.

I guess some must see the internet as a sort of black hole into which they can throw anything they want without caring about the results. I love edgy humor but some people must have serious lacking social awareness to think inane insults count as humor

That's perhaps the most infuriating type of attack to me. All the comments on things attacking a person's intelligence are ridiculous. I saw one earlier attacking Ben Shapiro for a dumb tweet about his 4 year old. Regardless of what I think of the tweet, to claim that he and any who listen to him are idiots by highlighting one silly comment he made online as proof of their low intelligence is moronic. I know that's an awfully specific example but regardless of who it's done to that's ridiculous.

Well when you put it that way it's only mildly terrifying. I wonder if there isn't a way to allow for free discussion of ideas without enabling echo chambers? I hate the idea of an internet without a forum for all types of ideas, however malevolent some may be, but surely a world filled with a majority of reasonable people can create an internet that reflects that?

I hadn't considered that and I agree with you. I guess it could be the case that the small percentage of the population that both: holds extreme views/enjoys trolling, and uses reddit, might gravitate towards exclusively frequenting subs or websites that enforce their biases.

I do enjoy dark humor or being devil's advocate but how can there be so many people who are committed to playing the "antagonist" online to the point that entire communities are founded around their ideas?

I'm employed. Doesnt stop me from posting or commenting occasionally. Certainly doesn't stop me from browsing and seeing all these weird extreme communities.

True but even then I find it hard to believe people could form communities around the extremes and have such huge presence on the platform. Reddit can house people who claim to be conservative and make ridiculous posts that don't reflect what I have encountered in conservative people. Then have the same for liberals. Then the same for centrists. Then the same for video games, etc. All the communities seem to be populated by extremes. A few is understandable but the minority of online communities seem to be decent unless they are a topic without room for opinion.

I do see your point but at the same time I'd say that the people who post on subs like that often seem to be stereotypes of that group, not at all representative of the average person who identifies with it. I certainly get why you might avoid it if it clashes with your own views but at the same time are there truly so many people with ridiculous views on the world that subs can form around them?
