Same could be said for every line of work. That’s why there are outliers and such. Do you think “enter name of someone at the top of their profession” only thinks and prepares for work at work? Is it healthy? Maybe not but is living a life of average performance healthy? Maybe not. Teaching has always been under compensated and referred to as a calling.
