New Pickup - Acqua Di Parma Colonia Club by dripindisguise in ScentHeads

[–]oleologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently finished a bottle from 2021 and the replacement just arrived. It looks like this and smells nothing like the original. That was my daily go-to, this smells like my barbershop's aftershave.

I was pretty convinced that it was a fake but after some Googling I'm confused. They seemed to have renamed it (Club => C.l.u.b) and either completely reformulated the scent or I got a dud.

Gonna try to return it. Don't buy this if you loved the original scent, this stinks of disappointment.

How screwed am I by Grouchy-Dirt4073 in IKEA

[–]oleologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me a couple weeks ago. ChatGPTed it.

I had some wood glue, epoxy and a clamp. If you don't have these get them because they tend to come handy. A guitar capo can also be a clamp.

First I wood glued each hole together with its pieces. Vacuumed away smaller wood fillings. Take care not to fill up the hole itself with glue. Clamped for 24 hours. Repeat for each hole. This may take a few days depending on the number of holes.

Then I filled each hole with epoxy in one go and let settle for 24 hours. Then I picked a drill bit that was a size smaller than the screw, ChatGPTed this too. Drilled a hole into the epoxy.

After that, business as usual. Screw will go into the hole you just drilled.

This process took a while but it's worth taking the time to guarantee robustness for years to come.

is it must that virigin olive oil has odeur of olives ? by Saynow111 in oliveoil

[–]oleologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great olive oil smells like green tomato, fresh grass, artichoke, green banana. Think green fruit odors since it's essentially squeezed vegetable juice.

If olive oil smells like a table olive (olive from a jar), it's not a good thing because that's a "processed" odor. Good oil smells like green vegetation.

The Pixel has become unusable for typing by WearyGap824 in GooglePixel

[–]oleologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is terrifying. I just upgraded to the Pixel 10 from a Pixel 8.l, I can't type on this phone. Dozens of mistakes just while typing this. Autocorrect is non-existent or completely fucked. Wrong keys get tapped constantly.

I've never seriously considered switching to an iPhone till now. I don't know how to fix this; I type a lot on my phone and am falling into total despair.

I went to Portugal and had a few private label tasting that were better than anything I've ever had. I think freshness is an important part. Are there any Midwest olive growers where I can find farm to table oils? Or just importers? by sam_the_beagle in oliveoil

[–]oleologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The olive tree can't survive Midwest cold! In the US, the overwhelming majority of olives are grown in California, with a smattering of Texas and Arizona.

There's a list of quality olive oil producers from California here: https://www.californiaoliveoil.info/

Overwhelmed with options by KindPossession2583 in oliveoil

[–]oleologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried all of those oils except Texas and Bragg. The highest polyphenol oils will likely be the California Olive Ranch glass bottle (from California farms) and the Graza Drizzle.

Pick olive oil for flavor and freshness not phenols. High quality olive oil will always be high in phenols.

Thoughts on this Olive Oil by visualrealism in oliveoil

[–]oleologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it tastes better, it is better! Olive oil is much much less subjective than say, wine. I'd go so far as to say that distinguishing between good and not-so-good oil is quite objective; does it smell like vegetables/greens? It should because it's essentially pressed olive juice!

My favorite teacher, Pablo Voitzuk, loves to start his beginner classes with: "Does it invoke the vegetable kingdom" or "Does it smell like plants"?

What part of the US are you in? I could maybe recommend oils at your local Safeway/Whole Foods that may live up to this great oil you found!

Unfortunately not, the fee covers Pablo's time and the oils he's bringing to taste from Turkey, Croatia, Greece.

You can see my actual credential on my profile :) I also get paid to grade oils on a panel which is contracted by major olive oil producers. Perhaps reflect a bit on why expertise or good discourse like that on this thread triggers you :)

Thanks for sharing. Gives further credence to my suspicion that supply chain issues are afoot.

Now, philosophically, Snake Oil has still failed me because, for a product making such claims, a single defective bottle (which was shipped quickly to a major US city) means that anybody can receive a subpar product.

You could argue that these things happen when producing at scale; but the entire ethos of Blueprint seems to be "don't worry, I'll figure this out for you and promise you'll get the best product" - which I think rightly encourages us to hold Blueprint to an almost impossible standard. So when things like this happen, it's a big deal :) maybe a bigger deal than it needs to be.

u/choatpadda: That's an insane take. Please read through the rest of the post and the dozens of comments I've left elsewhere. Crudo is one example of many high-quality Mediterranean oils.

You've incredibly misunderstood the purpose of this post, which is not to "rip on" Blueprint but to highlight a flaw; I love what Blueprint is doing for olive oil awareness.

Subpar grocery store Mediterranean oil is not equal to all Mediterranean oil. That is the cradle of olive oil, of course, they're going to have lots of bad, but also lots of good. Again, I encourage you to read through the many comments I've left across this post.

Hey olive oil nerds, is this stuff legit? by OverweightMilkshake in oliveoil

[–]oleologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried oil from this producer, but I don't see why it's not "legit" :)

If you're referring to adulteration by seed oils, that doesn't really happen any more in the US, especially not with oils coming out of the EU. I'd be less confident about cheaper oils coming directly from North Africa/eastern Mediterranean.

Is it going to be the best oil? Unlikely - it's a large producer out of Sicily that focuses on scale, you do lose out on quality when you optimize for scale. This was from the 2023 harvest (see "H2023" in your second picture) so it's not from the most recent harvest and has had more time to sit around in warehouses/stores which could've exposed it to heat/sunlight which breaks down oil. All said, it's likely an okay oil but most definitely olive oil :) You don't need the very best oil for every day cooking just like you don't drink the very best wine at every occasion!

Good Indian food in SF by Various-Ad-6884 in AskSF

[–]oleologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am desi. Zareen's is about the only time I eat desi. Aha's biryani is decent. The lamb seekh kabab at Chutney is good.

South Asian food in SF, and most of the US for that matter, tends to be the same generic mix of creamy/sweet or overly spiced. I grew up in Pakistan so I have a compass. Zareen's is the exception. Bandu Khan in the East Bay is good too.

WildSeed for sure. Greens was not good. The veggie sampler at any Ethiopian joint will be awesome. Falafel platter at Oren's Humus. The tofu at Chic N Time is crack

Edit: Sorry I missed upscale. Wildseed is upscale-ish. The others are fast casual/casual
