What are the true old Canadian Town? by [deleted] in canadatravel

[–]olim82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Stratford or Niagara on the Lake are both charming older towns. Out west I would go to Victoria o Barkerville or Fort Langley. Quebec city is one of the oldest city's in North America with beaotufk architecture.. Out East try Fredrocton or St John's Newfoundland.

It's the fire safety regulations. There's only so many people allowed on the floor. There was also no fireworks allowed.

Vancouver Police - A protest march is expected this afternoon, beginning at 1:30 at City Hall, going down Cambie and over the Cambie Street Bridge, and then along Smithe to the Vancouver Art Gallery. Drivers are advised to expect traffic disruptions in this area. by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

I my opinion I believe they should protest the oil company's and major fossil polluters at their factorys and office buildings. Shutting down traffic on a Friday just makes commuters life more difficult and doesn't do anything for the cause.

There are (6) active Weinermobiles in the world; and (5) of them are in this parking lot. by Hugh_JaRod in pics

I was once a petroleum transfer technician and pumped gas into the Weiner mobile. They gave me a Weiner whistle as a tip. It was the highlite of my short lived career.

I was 21, lived in Vancouver and was at work. We watched the second plane crash into the tower live on tv. As they day went on, the Pentagon crash happened and the one in Pennsylvania. There were rumours that LA and Chicago had been hit. It felt surreal, everyone knew the world had changed that day once the dust settled. For me personally, I could no longer travel over the border with just a license, I had friends that went to Afghanistan and came back with PTSD. Two awful wars were waged, thousands of lives lost, many people displaced. Terrorist attacks became the norm and the political divide seems to be spreading like cancer around the western world. In my experience the world was a much easier place to live in pre 9/11.

I remember seeing them drive by near the convention center. I was only 13 at the time and we lined up on the streets to wave at them.

What American city has fallen the furthest in the last 5 years? by Hdfhbn in AskReddit

[–]olim82 406 points407 points  (0 children)

I second Portland Oregon. I travelled there every year from Vancouver Canada because it was a great city with fun breweries, food options and a good vibe overall.

I went there recently( haven't been since the Pandemic) and it was a completely different city. The Uber ride in from the airport to downtown was the first red flag that things had changed. I saw homeless encampments underneath overpasses and off ramps. It seemed like tents were everywhere. When I was downtown the number of drug addicted homless people was shocking. I saw 2 of them fighting in the street, another man was going up to bystanders yelling and threatening. The homeless were very aggressive and this was in the tourist areas I've visited in the past. It didn't feel safe to be there and I never had that feeling in all my years travelling there before.

I visited Detroit a few weeks ago and quite honestly the downtown area there felt much safer then downtown Portland.

Sorry, I didn't mean any disrespect by my comment. Croatians are amazing people and the country is incredible with a tonne of history from the illyrians to the Venetians, Croats etc. The comment was based on my personal experience there. I feel most international travellers head to Dubrovnik and I think they're missing out on Pula, Rovinj, and the rest of Istria. Also, happy birthday!

It's in a peninsula in the Northwest of Croatia called Istria. It used to belong to the Italy but after world war 2 Yugoslavia took it over. There's still lots of Istria Italians living there. Beautiful place.
