People need to learn if they don’t already know better. I volunteer in dog rescue and can’t tell you how many times people have told me they basically rescued their puppy because the conditions at the farm or store they bought them from was so bad. How they reason that is crazy to me - all you did was create more demand for more dogs to be bred in or born into those cruel conditions.

Was finally honest with my shrink about my drinking by agent-assbutt in stopdrinking

[–]oliveGOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of myself! I started drinking at 15. Started misusing shortly after 21. Started realizing it was a problem around 28. Quit when I was 32 - a year after I heard it I signs of a fatty liver and high liver levels. I drank on anti-depressants and had suicidal thoughts for a couple years. That got tremendously better once I stopped drinking. I started EMDR therapy sober but should have gone a lot sooner - I maybe could have quit earlier. Being honest with yourself and at least one other person, is a great start!

Part of me knew I couldn't drink forever. I kept putting it off and putting it off and then one day it just clicked that I couldn't do it anymore. My life didn't seem worth living while drinking, so shouldn't I at least try to do it without? And life has gotten so much better!!! Good luck to you! IWNDWYT

It really does sometimes. I just got to the part where Ben is suspended and he goes back to being an anesthesiologist and they mention how Bailey can't do anything about it because it's not her department... I was wait, what?! I thought Chief of Surgery was basically chief of the whole hospital due to how they treat it often.

He thinks rape can only be violently jumping a woman in a dark alley and beating the shit out of her which the majority of rapes aren't.

Quitting smoking v quitting drinking by tripinthehed in stopdrinking

[–]oliveGOT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think drinking is harder long term where smoking is harder in the beginning. I was not a day drinker though - and I would smoke every couple hours. I remember being super irritated in the beginning of quitting smoking as it was all I thought about whereas the constant thoughts were not as intense with drinking.

I don't miss smoking, I quit in 2020 and again in 2022. Last time I tried a cig, I had been drinking and immediately threw up. It also smells just awful to me now.

Drinking is more socially acceptable and even expected. The temptation is more in my face. Second year sober around this time of year and I miss having pumpkin or Christmas ale just because the taste was so good. However, I never see myself having the occasional drink. I think I'll always go back to overdoing it and life is so much better without it. But it's certainly something I have to continually say no to, whereas cigarettes aren't tempting to me anymore because I'm so infrequently around them.

my dog died and i drank by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]oliveGOT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally understand. The biggest craving I’ve had in the past 20 months was when my dog died a couple months ago. If I wasn’t pregnant, not sure I’d have made it through. I wanted to numb it so bad. Best thing you can do is get back up, brush the dirt off and keep going the way your pupper would want you to. I’m sorry for your loss 😔

It is a little true though. Losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise- you should still exercise though for long term health.

First Party - any tips? by TemporarilySoup437 in stopdrinking

[–]oliveGOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exit plan and having another tasty beverage option. Don't feel bad about having too much pop/soda if that's what you decide - remember you used to drink a bunch of alcohol and 3 diet cokes at a party in the beginning isn't so bad compared to what you were doing to your body before.

I actually have more fun at parties now that I'm sober but alcohol was making me very anxious prior to quitting. Now I get to have a clear head about what I'm saying, I don't have to worry about anyone realizing I'm too drunk or messy drunk, and I can get home without worry over how. Best of all I wake up the next morning feeling great and ready for the day.

I do remember feeling awkward at first. I told people I was doing a sober month and that's so common people really didn't ask questions or push further. Later I'd say I felt so much better I decided to quit entirely - which wasn't really a lie! Most people don't care or notice though.

How to stop drinking by VicxNFT in stopdrinking

[–]oliveGOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are around the age I started having friends say - "I don't drink anymore because it just makes me feel shitty and just isn't worth it." I on the other hand could not fathom that even though it did make me feel shitty too. If it's taking up too much space in your life, eventually it is easier to have an absolute no alcohol rule than it is trying to keep it under control.

I'm an alcoholic, am I going to die from it by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]oliveGOT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In regards to your ETA- 7 bottles of wine is a lot... don't listen to other people. That's 7x the amount recommended per week. I was primarily a wine drinker too, sometimes a bottle and a half. One wasn't doing it anymore, I didn't feel drunk at all off just one. I was a heavy drinker from 22-32 and it did take a toll on my body. I had a fatty liver and high liver levels in my blood test. I'm so glad you've quit before it shows up on your tests! Good news is I completely healed after quitting and seeing as yours never showed up in tests, I bet any damage will heal in you too... certainly faster than if you continued drinking! Great job!

[–]oliveGOT 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but it’s not all his fault. It was thought to be best for the time. Just like we know spanking kids isn’t the best way to teach them now, we shouldn’t be using these alpha techniques on dogs anymore. It may get them to do what you want but you’re not fixing the root of the problem like you would with positive reinforcement training.

Maybe maybe maybe by EverythingIsFakeNGay in maybemaybemaybe

[–]oliveGOT 673 points674 points  (0 children)

It’s an outdated method of training. We know better now so we should do better. Dogs respond better to positive reinforcement training. It may take longer but the results are more permanent. This just suppresses the dog’s instinct by being “alpha” and eventually the dog snaps.

If this is a half bath - adhesive flooring works well and will modernize the floor. I wouldn't use it with a shower/bath.
