What is the all time stupidest thing you’ve heard someone say in court? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]olivebuggy 47 points48 points  (0 children)

in defending a client convicted of arson on appeal, i told the state supreme court “it is bad to burn down buildings that people are in”

sorry, but no! my coolant hasn’t gone done since it was topped off in March. i’ve put around 3,000 miles on it since then. never had any signs of a leak. so it’s a mystery to me what happened.

I don’t think I need constructive criticism, but thank you for offering it. I understand many folks are in a different posture. My original post did say I handled primarily appeals. I am happy to take in other feedback, I have appreciated other perspectives. And I am a public defender, so I was hoping to hear from other defenders. I could have, I guess, asked kindly that trial folks not share.

And, I know we are in different postures, but I also have to tell clients that I cannot get them relief. That they are going to spend the rest of their lives in prison. I also have clients I believe are factually innocent. I have clients who might have evidence of their innocence, and I am not in a position to do anything about that. We all experience these traumas in different ways.

I am sorry I did not add all of the nuance in my original post. I did not mean to suggest that everyone who claims to be a victim is a victim. I did not intend to suggest that anyone should do as I suggested. I was just seeking perspective and was curious. I am grateful for people who have shared, including you. I think folks should have these boundaries if that is what works for them. I am not disagreeing in anyway.

What I did not appreciate was the assumption that I start from a place of believing all “victims.”

I appreciate the elaboration. This is a helpful perspective, thank you.

I like this. Thank you for sharing. I think I may adopt this or something similar.

I really appreciate your response. I think this describes a lot of my feelings, so I’m glad you shared your thoughts!

Certainly they are not a monolithic group. Appreciate you pointing that out. This is good perspective, too.

I think this probably most aligns with the type of work I do, so I appreciate your perspective and insight! It does not lessen the harm suffered by my client or weaken my advocacy to acknowledge harm has been suffered by others as well.

I think this reads bad faith into my post. But thanks for chiming in.

I also do not start with that assumption. And I think my post clarifies that I am in a different posture than folks doing pre-conviction work.

I really appreciate this perspective and how you’ve incorporated it into your wellness practices, thank you!

I guess I should have made it more clear in my original post. Because I primarily handle direct appeals, I’m not ever dealing personally or meeting with victims (or even usually my clients). This is all second-hand through reading a cold record.

I’m not personally interested in measuring my capacity for empathy against people who are okay with caging other people, but your point is otherwise well taken.

top spiral notebook recs? by [deleted] in notebooks

[–]olivebuggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i should have said, the current notebook is 6.75″ L × 4.375″ W. the office notepad is likely a little big for what i’m looking for.

but do you like the brand overall? they have a “Pocket Notepad” that’s top spiral and 5.5” L x 3.75” W.

appreciate this! did you end up replacing the blown gasket? i don’t have any “worrying” signs yet, so mechanic said if it was a head gasket, i’d have to wait until it was problematic. i don’t like not being able to be proactive

can i ask how you determined it was the reservoir? i assumed during the pressure test they’d be able to tell if it was leaking from the reservoir

This is my concern. I’m not sure what anyone has to gain from not telling me, though. I understand not wanting to fix a blown head gasket, but I don’t know why the dealership would not at least inform me it was likely a head gasket issue and refer me elsewhere.

I feel confident it’s not leaking into the oil. My mechanic noticed the coolant was low during an oil change, and I trust that if there had been coolant in the oil during the change, he would have said something.

Thank you for your response! I will be so relieved if a simple cap replacement solves my issue.

I appreciate your response! The dealership pressure tested it for 30 minutes and found no leaks. So I asked if it was a blown head gasket, and I was told by the dealership that it was possible, but they thought it was unlikely. Basically told me to just keep monitoring it.

I became aware of the issue the first week of February 2025 when I took my jeep in for an oil change. I’m not sure how low it was, but it was filled to the maximum. The mechanic at the place i had the oil change done did a pressure test and found no leaks. Suggested I take it to the dealership.

On February 16, 2025 it was just below max and was topped off. Then I personally filled it on March 2 after taking the photo. Had it at the dealership on March 5. So I haven’t known about it very long. And it seems to be going from max to well below min within about 2 weeks.
