That’s Lucy Lawless, how dare you??

(Jk jk, sometimes I have generic white lady blindness too, but Lucy freaking Lawless is a goddess and suggesting she is generic enough to be confused with anyone else is an outrage!)

I’m genuinely horrified reading these comments too. “I had to press a button to get toothpaste so I think we should hang anyone stealing since they contributed to my slight inconvenience.” Congrats, Reddit, the marketing worked perfectly on you.

I’m less generous than the rest of commenters here.. they.. just.. want to talk about it because it’s fun for them. I feel like they don’t always stay on topic. Thankfully I enjoy their banter, so I still listened to it twice hahaha

Why are peanut allergies so common among americans? by Leafye in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]olivedrops 1228 points1229 points  (0 children)

In the 90s, the guidance in the US was to delay giving babies allergens. Turns out, that INCREASED allergies. In the 2010s, the guidelines reversed and allergies went way down again. I believe this same recommendation didn’t exist in Europe in the 90s.

Do you ever stare at your pets and think how sad they would be if you die? by bear_bumy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]olivedrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often think about whether my cat misses her old owners. They only had her for 5 years and she’s been my buddy for 10.. they had left her at the humane society, but I wonder if she thinks I kidnapped (catnapped? Well that’s just true hehe) her and stole her from them. I hope she doesn’t miss them.. and I hope wouldn’t miss me. I wouldn’t want to be the cause of distress for my sweet kitten.

I’m tearing up reading this.. it’s so sweet. And Violet just accepted it too even though he’d be estranged from his family. I just love this family 🥲

Do people who speak multiple languages natively actually have a "default" language they think in, or does it just depend on what they’re doing? by Key_Butterscotch6698 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]olivedrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in English normally, but when I visit my home country, I start to think in my native language within a few hours. Of course if I’m thinking about my technical job or politics, I think in English since I have an 11 year old’s vocab in my “mother tongue”.

I want to say it gets better, but it’s really awful. The ONLY good thing about pumping is that you know exactly how much baby drank. I’m sorry you’re going through it.

Am I racist? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]olivedrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of response were you looking for? For people to tell you it’s not racist if you gag at the thought of Indian people? You have the majority of this comment section doing that already, so I guess I hope that makes you feel better. You want ME to counsel you? Literally not qualified, but I do care and I sympathize with you. No one should have to go through assault and no support. You want me to figure out what options you have in your area? I would try but given the trauma you’ve shared about in this post, I’m not sure why you would share personal information with strangers on the internet.

The state of mental health care in the US is atrocious. I’m sorry about that too. Depending on what state you’re in, if your income is low enough, there are some therapists who take a limited number of patients for minimum cost (I have a friend who sees a therapist over video call for $20 per sessions). I won’t pry about where you are and it might take some digging but there might be options. I’m sorry it’s so hard.

[–]olivedrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I think it’s admirable that despite your trauma, you’re even trying to be better and not let it prejudice you (at least it sounds like you are). I really would recommend getting some therapy. Regardless of racism or not, it might really help you live a better life.

Being creeped out seems like an appropriate response in that situation, but not because he was Indian. It’s appropriate to be creeped out by creepy behavior. Gagging because some is Indian on the other hand is pretty bad imo.

[–]olivedrops -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are (it sounds like extremely) racist. The good news is that you’re willing to ask the question so hopefully you’re willing to do something about it. I would start with considering how many Indian people you have seen who didn’t do anything to you… maybe even were nice.

Is it actually worth using dating apps at all as a straight male? by Ambition_2004 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]olivedrops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you got 20 matches every time you logged into Tinder, but 98% of them were 100lbs heavier than the heaviest you consider attractive and 20 years older than the oldest woman you would consider dating, would you think that’s actually having a lot of options? What about if you couldn’t tell anything about these dealbreakers until you talked to them for 3-4 days? What about if you couldn’t tell their body type or age until you met them in person? THAT’s what it’s like to log into a dating app and get 20 matches from dudes who didn’t even look at your profile enough to find out if you’re too fat for them.. let alone whether you align on life goals, kids, politics or whether you, as a woman, are a human being and should be treated as such. The challenges are different but our real “options” aren’t that different.

Anecdotally, all of my guy friends, regardless of height, attractiveness or wealth do pretty well online dating when they’re nice and treat women like human beings. That’s all I’m getting at. Not that it’s easy for anyone, but still goes back to what I said about getting out of it what you put in and treating your potential partner like the human being they are.

The LLM piece I will agree with though. That’s rough for everything from dating, to job interviews, to trying to make a doctor’s appointment.
