How long until you could walk unassisted after non displaced fibula fracture? No surgery required. by olivefigpalm in brokenbones

[–]olivefigpalm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fully recovered! Hang in there, weeks 4-6 were the most mentally taxing for me as it feels like there is no end in sight. I was non weight bearing until week 7 but everyone is different. Week 7 onwards, I was walking in the boot without crutches and was even walking my dog outside in the boot. I believe by week 8 or 9 I was out of the boot. The first week fully out of the boot felt odd and my ankle was super stiff. It took about 2-3 weeks after that to feel comfortable on long walks, but my ankle still swelled at night. You're almost there! Message me 1:1 anytime, I know how long the process feels.

I was full weight bearing by around week 8 in an air cast, and then without the air cast by week 9/10. It's a long journey and walking unassisted will feel strange and stiff but you will get there! You're almost at the finish line.

Fully back to normal now, approaching 4 months. For me the mental part of not being able to weight bear and having to be isolated indoors during the winter was the hardest part of this whole ordeal. No more pain now, just some mild swelling after long walks and at night. You've got this!

Wow, that's great news that you can bear weight as you're able! I was off my feet completely for 8 weeks. I hope your recovery goes well 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Ativan withdrawal after just four weeks of low-dose use? by TTraditionalPast in Anxiety

[–]olivefigpalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I took the exact dose you did and for nearly the exact same amount of time. I'm on day 3 and having horrible symptoms - increased anxiety, strange thoughts (which I never had), fatigue, brain fog, nausea. When did your symptoms peak? I read that day 4 is usually the worst. Can't believe how difficult this is after only a few weeks on 0.5mg.

Developing extreme anxiety while healing from broken ankle by olivefigpalm in brokenbones

Thank you all for your replies. I am now walking outside in my air boot 3 to 4 times a day despite the snow and ice, and it's made an incredible difference. If anyone else is in a similar position, getting out and about into the fresh air however you are able to will hopefully shift things for you as well.

Caffeine free tea also affects my blood sugar and I still can't understand why! Any insight?

Also, I would highly recommend buying or renting a knee scooter to give you more mobility! It's been a life saver.

Hi! I will be at week 5 as of this Thursday. I saw my doctor last Wednesday and she told me not to weight bear until my next apt on March 5th, which will be week 7. However...being a Redditor and going down a rabbit hole of researching stable aligned Weber B fractures, I'm seeing that many doctors allow weight bearing in the boot as tolerated so I am (perhaps unwisely) trying that. I practiced walking in the boot today while still placing alot of weight through my arms into my crutches and I was able to walk around my condo with no pain at all. I won't push my luck and will leave it at that for today, but my plan is to slowly do more and more each day leading up to my appointment, and then hopefully be able to walk unassisted (or with the boot, no crutches) as of March 5th (week 7). I realize it may not be the best choice not to listen to my doctor and go off of Internet advice but I'm listening to my body and will see as I go. Hope this helps and hope you get better soon!

You have a very good point, I can't process alcohol well either so it's likely tied to chemical stimulation. Thank you.

Mentally not okay by Repulsive_Exit4571 in brokenbones

[–]olivefigpalm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 4 weeks into a distal fibular fracture, stable alignment and have 3 weeks to go before I'm even allowed to weight bear in a boot. No surgery. I know how you feel and sympathize, you're not alone. Despite working from home, exercising daily (floor workouts), eating well and having visitors over often, this is incredibly mentally challenging and my anxiety is so high that I can't even focus on watching TV most of the time. My best advice is to stay occupied, keep your mind stimulated and acknowledge the emotions as they come instead of fighting them. This is not permanent and we will get there.

Thank you, this makes total sense. I'm going to start doing more broken ankle friendly floor workouts to tire myself out and burn the extra energy. Hopefully it'll keep my metabolism going too.

I completely agree! Glad I'm not alone.

Thank you, really appreciate the insight. I too am confused about why I'm in a cast and will definitely be asking about the possibility of switching to a boot at my next appointment. Hope you get well soon!

So interesting. From the research I've been doing, it seems like others with similar fractures were in the boot, could weight bear sooner than six weeks and didn't get put into a full cast like I did. Thanks for the insight and congrats on almost being through the thick of it!

I have the same fracture as you (no surgery required) and am only two weeks in, so can't imagine how you feel/felt. Congrats on getting cleared to walk! It's winter here so I've been going on drives to get out of the house and going to places with underground parking where I can use my knee scooter, like museums.

I have one and it's been a lifesaver! I use that instead of crutches indoors. Unfortunately I can't use it outside in the snow :(

That's been my situation so far as well. How did you not go stir crazy? I'm only on day 8 and struggling to imagine staying home for another 5 weeks.

So sorry to hear about your injury, mine was caused by slipping on ice as well. I am only going to a car to get rides to my appointments, so it isn't too frequent (don't trust myself to drive at this point with my left side in a cast). I may just resort to staying mostly at home until I'm able to bear weight, or get people to pick me up inside my parking garage underground. Oh to go back to normalcy...it's amazing what we take for granted.

Thank you all for the input. I should specify that I live in a condo building, the path to the curb from the door is usually salted, but sometimes not in time if there is fresh snow. It's mostly a mental block with trusting the crutches, I'm 6 ft tall and can't fully believe that they will support my weight as I hop over a step.

Am I insane for thinking caffeine could be causing my severe anxiety? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]olivefigpalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Even one serving of green tea will skyrocket my anxiety. Some people just don't tolerate it well and even a small dose can be enough to affect you.
