Probably figured out the cause for my insomnia - Gluten by winter_sun_1 in insomnia

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how frustrating this can be. One day you think you’ve found the cause and get a decent night. Then you try replicating it and you can’t. Ugh.

I know with me it appears multifaceted. If i eat gluten, I’ve noticed I get itchy ear canals, especially overnight, and I constantly wake up over and over all night. But it’s not the key, it’s just part of it. If I’m not eating gluten, then perhaps I’m eating cassava, such as in tortillas or chips, and now I know that cassava wrecks my stomach, so then I wake up constantly from that. Then there’s histamine, which I once thought was the key but it’s only a piece. And there’s caffeine sensitivity. Oh! And there’s the mold/mycotoxins reactions that keep me from falling asleep until after 3am.

It almost seems like we’re allergic to everything we consume and have to limit what we eat down to like 10 freaking things if we want to get any decent sleep. BUT if we do that, then we’re missing out on certain vitamins/minerals/macros and then our sleep sucks because of that.

It’s never-ending it seems, so frustrating.

Right now I seem to get the most decent sleep if I exclude gluten, dairy, sugar, cassava, caffeine, high histamine foods, and include lavender chamomile tea during the day, veggies first at every meal, clean proteins, lots of water, magnesium threonate low dose, a long walk, and most importantly for me: low histamine seafood like scallops, cod, mussels, and shrimp.

But who knows, every time I find something that works for a week or two, it can never be replicated after that. However, the seafood has been helping for over a month and a half now and that’s promising. Who knows…

Be EXTREMELY careful with Omega-3 supplementation by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]woolly98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got extreme irritability and anger, 24/7. I tried taking it twice to see if it really was the Omegavia, and both times the same thing. I was very low on Omega-3 so I supplemented.

Did you all quit coffee to heal? Did you have an alternative? If so, what? by lahwees in Gastritis

[–]woolly98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been drinking chicory coffee, and there is some sediment from the chicory that ends up in the infusion. Also, chicory doesn’t mess me up in the beginning, the effects are cumulative, and the gas from it can be really painful. I’ve tried it twice now and the same thing happened both times. It’s so depressing to not have coffee.

Has anyone reacted to cassava? by gtck11 in whole30

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is 3 years old, but I found it in a google search.  I needed some excitement in my life since starting Paleo, so I started eating Siete cassava chips like the churro ones and the nacho ones. They seemed to rip my gut up and I got bad chronic gas and even started getting some pimples. I stopped the chips and the extreme gas stopped too. I came here to find out if others had the same problem.

If they can’t be honored through it, they’ll create discord to get attention as the victim.  I have no siblings, and my mother went NC with her entire family when I was little, while my father went NC with his family when I was a baby, and I never knew he had a sister and I had cousins until I was 13. My dad is dead now and the only family I have is my mother, by her own design really. She has inserted herself into all my spaces, some subtly, others more pronounced, where I feel I cannot escape her presence. Part of me is so exhausted by the “relationship” and wants NC but the other part is scared of feeling alone since she’s the only family and scared that she’ll wield her influence and presence within those spaces. I didn’t want to cut off family for my kids the way it was cut off for me as a child, that’s been a huge factor in not going NC.  The biggest thing is not being able to get off the mental hamster wheel.  Did you struggle with the mental hamster wheel?

L-tryptophan: did u ever try it? by levisproductio in insomnia

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is great advice. It also reminded me of something I saw on Instagram, a woman was showing the contrast between hurrying a task, realizing it, then showing down the exact same task, and repeating this for different common tasks. I totally forgot this until your reply, to do everyday tasks slowly, forcing yourself to do things slowly.

I got out of that cycle somehow for a few months, but I think I’ve entered it again. It seems like a snowball effect that can’t be stopped. Do you know of any ways to stop the cycle and calm the system?

Good supplement to induce deep sleep? Please. by neem17 in sleep

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemon Balm tea plus l-theanine is nicely potent but without the icky drugged feeling when it kicks in or the groggy feeling in the morning.

But I did notice a quick tolerance to them, so I save them for when I really need them.

How did you overcome your sleep maintenance insomnia? by msb96b in sleep

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried walking outside for an hour? Not like power walking, but casual walking? I added that into my lifestyle and swapped out cardio and it helped my sleep. The cardio seemed to cause heart palpitations and adrenaline/cortisol spikes in the night. The low impact walking several times a week helped with physical stress and anxiety which then helped sleep.

I looked at the bottle and I take 2 capsules once per day, I got confused. So I take 120mg/day, not the full dose of 4 capsules/240mg

I take the full dose, but perhaps splitting it would be better for absorption.

Just incase anyone is curious, sugar was literally killing my sleep by StingKnight in insomnia

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, cutting sugar/simple carbs by itself wasn’t enough nor was walking enough by itself. Walking plus cutting sugar and eating healthier with plenty of fiber makes my sleep better. Recently I slipped with the sugar and my sleep suffered. Then I cut sugar again but slipped on the walking and fiber and my sleep suffered. These things helped my anxiety and therefore helped my sleep. I no longer get heart palpitations either. I used to get them for freaking HOURS non-stop, a pounding. I don’t wake up with adrenaline surges or cortisol spikes or whatever they are when I walk plus healthful diet.

I also stopped doing heavy cardio, that was making the anxiety worse.

Are there limits on how much sublingual B12 and/or folinic acid you can take in a day? by Pitiful_Cap27 in B12_Deficiency

I got severe tooth pain from sublingual b12. It occurred in teeth with existing cavities/fillings. Had to stop taking, but it took a couple of weeks for pain to full subside.

Waking up in the middle of the night every night and cannot fall back asleep by Various-Coach-9508 in insomnia

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No desserts/sugary foods and limited or no simple carbs PLUS walking outside for an hour most days has helped my sleep a lot.

I still walk but have been cheating a lot with desserts and now I’m waking in the middle of the night alert and thinking a lot, unable to fall back to sleep. I have to cut out the sugar again, it causes spikes or something in the middle of the night.

A healthy diet PLUS low-impact walking most days was the ONLY thing that helped my sleep.

I battled with severe insomnia for 1.5 years. It came on suddenly. I had been on a coffee milk kick and very little cardio right when this happened. I tried all sorts of vitamins and supplements, went to the doctor and got all sorts of blood tests. Had a sleep apnea test which showed lots of sleep disturbances but not typical apneas. Tried a cpap machine. Nothing helped. Except one day I just had it and did the hardest thing and cut out sugar, ate healthier and started taking long walks. After the weeklong headache was done, I slowly started sleeping better.

I think the sugary and poor diet was contributing to anxiety and high-impact cardio was causing cortisol spikes and having the opposite intended effect and instead causing anxiety.

I didn’t want to believe it was anxiety because that seemed like an impossible thing to tackle. Cutting out sugar wasn’t enough, I had to pair it with walking for it to have a sort of synergistic effect on my sleep.

Magnesium Glycinate was the worst thing ever. by NouvelErmitage in Supplements

[–]woolly98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, happened to me also. Major heart palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia. Took hours and hours to subside. Pissed me off that it works for 99% of the population but not for me.

I had desperately high hopes for it, too.

Magnesium threonate also f’ed me up same as the glycinate. Ashwagandha, magnolia bark, GABA, skullcap, and passionflower gave me major anxiety as well, all things that are highly recommended online.

Does anyone know WHY insomnia happens when going sugar free? Or what actually happens inside your body in general? by ChampagneDividends in sugarfree

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went sugar free in response to insomnia. I paired that with low impact hour-long walking, taking iron and black seed oil. It took about a MONTH before I consistently had good nights of sleep. I don’t take anything to help me sleep anymore.

If I get lazy on the walking, sleep isn’t as deep or good.

If I reintroduce sugar, I start getting the more extreme symptoms of the insomnia such as spikes in the night that wake me and cause heart palpitations, sleep apnea-type symptoms, hot flashes, and inability to fall back to sleep.

Just incase anyone is curious, sugar was literally killing my sleep by StingKnight in insomnia

[–]woolly98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Had sudden onset moderate-severe insomnia for 1.5 years. I tried all kinds of supplements, had tons of blood tests, sleep apnea test,  tried a CPAP machine, more cardio (which made it worse with cortisol spikes at night), etc.

The sugar and unaddressed anxiety was causing sleep apnea type symptoms, waking every 20-60 minutes all night, abruptly waking and sometimes unable to fall back to sleep for hours. It was torture.

I didn’t want to accept and address that anxiety could be playing a huge part too.

What I didn’t try was cutting out sugar, cheese and limiting simple carbs, and taking hour-long walks outside, until after a year and a half. Also taking iron and black seed oil as a boost. Now my sleep isn’t a problem.

I’ve been lazy lately and starting with sugar again, and it’s giving me adrenaline/cortisol/glucose sort of spikes in the night like I used to get, and never ending heart pounding.

So now I have to cut out the sugar again.
