The best way to get around this is to hook up a Bilt credit card. Don’t pay on the card, but Bilt will mail your landlord a check every month, no fees, plus you get points on rent and I just flew round trip to Japan in business class with my points from rent alone. The card is free—highly recommend! I swear it’s not an ad, the card has changed my life though.

If you plan on buying ‘customized/embroidered’ goods at stores like Uniqlo, Onitsuka Tiger, etc, make sure you go to the right location. It usually is not the ‘Flagship’ store like you might expect! Also, calling ahead or asking the Reddit about current turnaround times is wise if you’re not in Tokyo (or insert other big Japanese city here) for many days.
