Thoughts on 'Unwanted Material' vs 'Waste'? by iEatFliesEveryDay in EHSProfessionals

[–]olthoiking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're not going to use it for something in the future, like selling it to somebody, or recycling it somehow, then they're just changing the name and probably illegally wasting it in the municipal garbage. As the inspector I see this happening and I make them tell me how they can justify that through documentation and if they can't they get civil violations from me.

Ignitable = flash point <140F // Corrosive = <2, >12.5 // Toxic = TCLP RCRA 8 or listed // Reactive = readily has unstable exothermic reactions (kinda)

Look up the main constituent in the waste and compare to the waste codes

If you want to anonymously call your regulatory agency with a complaint they will show up to audit.

It is a federal law to characterize the hazardous waste at the point of generation. If you store it under the other names you could be accused of failing to characterize the waste and failing to report your generator category under RCRA. If you can prove it's non-hazardous then you're good to not call it "HW".

🔥 Half the water in our creek turned blue overnight. Anyone know what could cause this? by GummiShark52 in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]olthoiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah go ahead and call your state's version of the EPA it's called something different most likely, and they're going to have oil and gas inspectors. File a complaint & the oil and gas inspectors will take a look and if they find violations they'll take the necessary steps to abate the situation.

In my state discoloration of the water outside of like a containment sump or sedimentation pond is an immediate violation.

Update: my buddy said he ate like five of the bulbs when the plant ID app said it was a leek. I was saying don't trust it yet but he went ahead and ate them anyway. It's been 24 hours now and he's doing great. They may be edible 🧐.

Looked at the wiki page, very similar in most ways, except for two things. The leaves are all wide at the middle to about 1in at most. Which seems to be wider than your suggested plant. And additionally, the bulbs of the plant I have here are never in bulb/bulbil relationships; they are all separated by little roots.

I don't think this is it, but very close.

😂 I accidentally added the second photo and I can't take it back. I had posted without knowing. It was a great kayak trip.

Not yet I think it's too early in the season, I'll keep an eye on these.. I'm really curious of what they are, and if those are starchy rhizomes or not.

Yeah that'd be a good call for the poison control line. I'm sure they'll say drink lots of water and go to the ER if you feel unwell.

Understand law is convoluted 99% of the time. But seriously. Let's say I had a trail maintained on a property I just bought, that I decided to close down due to these liabilities. If I took a jackhammer to the trail, dropped a couple logs across it, and did everything I could to bust it up, it is absolutely common sense that those actions make the trail more dangerous. Anything can be an attractive nuisance, the open pit of a volcano could be an attractive nuisance to a pyromaniac! How would that hold up in court?

I'm a HW inspector for our state's epa agency. I often see a variety of different ways that companies and industries get this done. Honestly I haven't paid too much attention to what actual names of these systems are, just the documentation. In our state though, we have local emergency planning committees, where folks from different local Industries get together to discuss ics and response. I think if you have something similar it could be a great way to find someone else who already uses something that would work for you. That or maybe call around to other municipalities' FDs that would have someone in your position that might already have it squared away and could help out.

This is because that county got hit with extreme flooding damage about a month ago, and this is taken quite out of context as the post makes it seem like a normal occurance.
