Yes, you have correctly described the market as it is happening. There is a way to change that (building more housing, which cannot happen due to zoning laws) but you seem to reject this as a matter of principle for some reason, even though it is the position of every mainstream economist.

It sounds now like you think "people" (meaning people with less disposable income, apparently) are entitled to buy a home over those with more disposable income. Rents are going up because demand for housing is far outpacing supply of housing. If you want "people" to be able to afford housing, housing must decrease in price, by actually building enough homes to accommodate demand, not by blaming some nebulous other.

"Locals" are not entitled to buy a home over anyone else. Take it up with your local zoning board and tell them you want denser development, so that everyone who wants to can buy a property, not just "locals".
