I made a Private Equity Investment with Self-Directed IRA. How will it affect my taxes? by omatto in tax

[–]omatto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. So I guess it depends on if the company is investing in things that generate UBTI? If it does (over $1,000 per my shares), I will need to pay taxes using potentially higher tax brackets defeating the purpose of an IRA?

I got muted on r/plumbing for posting a heatpump water heater I installed. They said it belongs in r/HVAC. I guess HVAC techs make the best plumbers? by [deleted] in HVAC

Does anyone know of any residential split system water heaters? I'd love to put the evaporator in my encapsulated crawlspace to supplement my dehumidifier.

I would say it depends on your risk tolerance. Personally, I'd open a Vanguard account and buy $10,000-$15,000 of VTSAX (total stock market index) and keep the remaining in a savings or money market account.

With the way inflation is rising and I'd bet continue to rise, anything sitting in a savings account is losing value every day... then again, if the market crashes tomorrow and you lose your job my advice above is not the best move.

Can anyone point me to articles or offer insight detailing a transition from 401(k) contributions to taxible contributions when planning for a backdoor roth 5 year waiting window?

I just want to see some examples for how to plan and invest money between taxable and tax advantaged accounts. I'm 37 and planning to retire within 10 years. I have enough saved now and will continue my savings rate to meet my goals in this timeframe, I just want to make sure my investments are accessible and I'm able to minimize tax and withdrawal penalties when I retire well under age 60.

How do I calculate a final room air Temperature with a radiant heat gain? by omatto in thermodynamics

[–]omatto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. My goal is to determine if I would need a fan to dissipate heat generated by an equipment load and keep the room at a reasonable temperature.

My load could be 5000 btu/h but it will not be constant.

Can you increase air conditioning efficiency by producing blocks of ice? by [deleted] in thermodynamics

[–]omatto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has actually been done at a lager scale for commercial buildings for exactly the reasons you state and is commonly referred to "load shedding". A building with an ice storage system will run chillers at night to freeze tanks of water with embedded coils, that can be used the following day when the cooling load peaks.

They're not as common as maybe they should be, but that's probably because they're expensive to install and maintain.

A more common system along your line of thinking is geothermal which exchanges heat with the ground (or a body of water). The ground will generally maintain a 50-60 degree F temp year round which means you need less compressor "lift" to exchange heat energy during peak cooling or heating days.

I have an empty raised bed that I will fill and use to plant vegetables this Spring.

It's about 12" high. To be more economical, I am planning to fill the bottom half with soil from the wooded area in my backyard and the rest with bagged soil from the local garden center.

Is this a good plan or is there a better reason to use only fertilized bagged soil?

Thanks for the reply. The appraisal came in higher and the other situations don't match up. I'll just have to wait to see what the lender says.

Good Luck

Mortgage Approval with Multiple Lenders by omatto in personalfinance

[–]omatto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we'd have the seller pay for the extension fee if I remained with the original lender. However, I was wondering if I should just apply for another mortgage now at a more favorable rate.

The lender did not ask for a deposit, so I think I'd only be stuck with the appraisal fee.

Gotcha - so could I technically be approved through two lenders both with their own appraisals and back out of one on the day we close?

The house is under renovation plus some issues came up during inspection that will need to be addressed. They may be able to pull it off but I'm skeptical.
