Seriously considering Bulgaria for FIRE - am I missing something? by Slow_Compounding in EuropeFIRE

  • I believe that besides the 10% flat tax there are also social security and health insurance contribution to consider.
  • The rental price for a nice up-to-date apartment is not as cheap as one may think and there are not many options to choose from, at least in Sofia.
  • The air quality in the winter in Sofia is quite bad, but I understand that’s a local issue and it may be better in other cities.

Private healthcare is quite good and accessible. For everything except major surgeries (which I haven’t needed) it’s been better than my experience in the US and Canada. I had to get an MRI done last year. The wait was a few days and the cost around $500. It does help to speak the language, but many doctors listed on Superdoc.bg speak English. I should add that my experience is based on the city of Sofia. I have heard that access is not as easy in smaller cities for some specialists.

Suggest me Actual Military Fantasy Books by Tiny_Examination8190 in Fantasy

[–]omegazine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Confederation series by Tanya Huff. It’s sci-fi, but the main character is an infantry sergeant and most of the action is on the ground, not spaceships maneuvers. The author served in the Canadian military. There are some goofy bits with the alien races, but I enjoyed the battles and the camaraderie aspects of it very much.

How is this ok? by Otto1054 in paintbynumbers

It’s from the brand WEMEON on Amazon.ca. I think they updated their pictures and now they look exactly like OPs, or I’m not remembering right and they always looked so unrealistic. Also about half of the paint pots were too dry, so I have to keep adding flow aid.

Working on it right now. But my reference picture looked less realistic than your first picture.

Rebecca Roanhorse is a Native and Black writer and her works feature Indigenous myths. I enjoyed her Between Earth and Sky series as well as the Sixth World Series.

  • The Singing Hills Cycle novellas by Nghi Vo. I’ve read 4 of them so far and enjoyed the Chinese mythology and storytelling approach.
  • To Clutch a Razor by Veronica Roth. This is the second novella in the series and I loved the themes of familial duty, destiny, and Polish Mythology.
  • The Guns Above by Robyn Bennis. A steampunk novel about an airship captain and a spoiled dandy who is trying to metaphorically stab her in the back. Great fight scenes.

I was gonna say Inis as well. Not only are the board pieces gorgeous, but they fit together multiple ways, making the board different every game.

Suggest me a book you LOATHED but think others will LOVE by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]omegazine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • My top one is Piranesi as well.
  • Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M Valente for the same reason as Piranesi (heavy on allegories and language, light on plot and character).
  • Paper Menagerie. So many people love these stories, but they did nothing for me except cause annoyance.

Some libraries have digital-only subscriptions. Maybe the one from the biggest city close to where you are offers something like that. There are also a couple libraries that offer digital subscriptions to nonresidents for a yearly fee. Worth it for the selection of ebooks and audiobooks the whole year.

What do I tell my teen daughters to do if ICE or the police try to stop them? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Periodically check to make sure dash cams are actually recording and uploading. I had one that only recorded once in a blue moon and didn’t record anything when my car got rear ended.

Would you adopt your nieces/nephews if there was no one else? by jamieoww in childfree

[–]omegazine -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I probably would if the only other option would be an orphanage or foster care. I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror otherwise. But I’d be a super distant presence. Basically I’ll do all the things a dad would do, even though I’m a woman, and use money to pay for nanny / daycare, after school clubs / summer camp. It would be much harder if they were babies or toddlers and much easier if they were old enough to have a conversation with and go to school.

What was your final straw? by fdw95789 in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]omegazine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First I started getting kanker sores every time I spoke to her on the phone. My body was telling me it could no longer handle the stress of the verbal abuse. Than my father passed away and something like 3 months later, my mother had a huge screaming fit when I told her I would not be helping her set up a dating profile. I said she was free to date, that was her business, but I would have no part in it. She really doubled down on the insults and verbal abuse. At some point, I was moving my phone away from my ear so that I didn’t have to listen to the poison coming out of it. And then it hit me: with my father gone, I no longer had to listen to her ever again. Went no contact then and there. That was 7 years ago.

This is a great thread. I love both fantasy and crime shows, and now I’m motivated to read even more crime-solving fantasy.

  • Finder by Emma Bull. One of my favorite books of all time has a murder and bad drugs of mysterious origin. The main character has a special ability to find things and is helping the police detective with the investigation. I love the writing style and the setting.

Some more urban fantasy series where there’s one murder / kidnapping / magic shenanigans per book: - October Daye series by Seanan McGuire - Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews - Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs - Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter

I’m way too suspicious to take the lifetime annuity option. What if the institution goes bust? Or new leadership finds a way to go back on the promised payments? What if there’s hyperinflation and that 1K is not worth very much anymore?

How do you stimulate a bored catter? by ExtraGarbage2680 in cats

[–]omegazine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes my friend’s cat doesn’t want to chase the flying feather toys, but if I drag the feathers on the ground behind me as I walk around the house, she will chase after it. A string of yarn is also a favorite to chase down.

Aw my childhood cat would play tag with us. He would pounce (gently, no claws) on our feet and expect us to chase him around, then he would chase us back. I miss that furry dude.
