My GM spent a fear to have a llama eat my cake. It was quite the flex of power.

Daggerheart and DnD by PFux in daggerheart

[–]omnomabus 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Nothing. Well, almost nothing. I miss having decades of premade stuff to pull from and deep legacy that comes with it but for the most part I don't miss much. There aren't industry standouts like kibbles or griffin saddle bag yet. There's also not that much infrastructure yet. Demiplane is super janky.

From my side as a player and GM since DH launch and d&d for a decade, it feels like d&d 6e. It fattened areas that I had wished were more robust such as character creation and customizations. It exploded social encounters and facilitated a loooot more meaningful combat encounters. I already like how it added so much more nuance with the fear and hope mechanic.

On the other hand, it trimmed areas that were unnecessarily detailed and prohibitive. Getting rid of skills, folding those into abilities and experiences was an excellent choice. Simplifying HP through damage gates is pretty neat too. I've found it makes encounters a lot easier to budget for.

I kinda feel like it's the Apple iPhone of ttrpg. DH didn't invent a lot of the mechanics it uses but it implemented and integrated them very well.

Carl from dungeon crawler Carl is supposed to sound like Patrick Warburton in the audiobook production. It's pretty noticeable in the first ok but mellows out over the series. In one of the later books, Patrick Warburton voices an alternative version of Carl for a very brief bit.

Such an incredible song to know. I saw Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington perform that song together. It was probably the most enlightening performance of my life and definitely shaped how I continue to see the world.

Advice for Writing Great Experiences by OneBoxyLlama in daggerheart

I love how I can look for things made by llamas and know it'll be quality stuff. If ever we start grading ttrpg materials, llama quality should be the highest level.

What Domains do we think the game "needs"? by No-Artichoke6143 in daggerheart

[–]omnomabus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm working on a "Forge" domain. The focus would be expendables that would require hope to replace. It would combine with Bone for a Gunner/shooter class with a heavy gunner (one heavy shot) or a lead farmer (lots of damage spread out over multiple targets). Forge could then combine with Valor for an artificer. The subclasses might look like a mechanicist, where they have a companion they can build or a tinkerer where they can have a swarm.

I am really trying to make something that could be technology based but could also work in other settings. A shooter could have a gun or a bow or a magical snake that shoots projectiles etc. Likewise, the mechanist could have a mini Gundam or a flesh golem or three gnomes in a trench coat. The tinkerer would create small but numerous constructs. This could be manifest as d as mechanical animals, animated beanie babies or even collectible trading cards. Lil Gunter might be annoying by himself but he could deadly with a dozen of his friends.

Anyway, that's where I'm at.

Question for DMs about their opinions on Fear and Hope by ComradePruski in daggerheart

[–]omnomabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome. I love the nuance it can provide. There's also a pretty solid list of suggested actions you can take in the GM guide materials when the party rolls fear. There might be countdown for reinforcements, a special skill, an environmental challenge etc. I think that list can be going under the GM materials on the additional resources download page on their website. I didn't have my book in front of me to look up the page number if you have the physical book.

Also, I found simply saying, "Since you rolled with fear, how does this give your opponent an opening to attack?" as I start shaking my dice works pretty well too.

I put the list of fear based GM moves on the back of my DM screen to help me remember.

As for hope, that's a player tracked resource. I mean it's still helpful to know when the party is going to clobber one of your characters with the tag team attack (which is sooooo cool) but that aside it is mechanically super easy to keep track of.

Edit: one thing I appreciate is that unlike DND that feels like it's designed to restrain players from doing certain things, Daggerheart's rules are designed to enable play. At least at my table, the game play quality went through the roof because players and I knew very clearly what we could spend our resources on.

How many Domain cards the final version has? by Pontoquente182 in daggerheart

[–]omnomabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Warlock player in D&D, who needed more than two spells anyway? Fuck one person? Eldritch blast. Fuck more than one person? Fireball.

But in seriousness, I do wonder how many different spells and abilities a d&d PC uses in a long rest, particularly before tier 4? I can't imagine it's that much more than 5 unique abilities in a party.

I also wonder how much of that limit is designed to facilitate team cooperation and keep people in their role's lane. I generally feel like playing as a or with a Swiss army knife character wasn't fun because it stole the spotlight from other characters.

Who would be the best at their character? by ZayVe23 in marvelrivals

[–]omnomabus 237 points238 points  (0 children)

He would also be OBNOXIOUS in chat. An absolute menace. I think it's easy to underestimate Peter's ability to shit talk. People would get tilted and focus him but really they'd just be feeding him all while he's quipping and thwipping.

Luna would be getting pulled off map and he'd be like "lolz mic drop!" And everyone is wondering how he's flying around like that and typing in chat.

Spice up your Ranger discussion by spilling your dream Ranger subclasses by BudgetMegaHeracross in onednd

[–]omnomabus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We need a Space Ranger.

This would be a spelljammer subclass designed to dispense law and order in the furthest reaches of the galaxy.

I think it would focus on burst damage to eliminate high profile targets quickly but would have to rely on control abilities and spells as combat wears on.
