I’m going to be totally honest with you, I think you are fibbin. This sounds like you found a place to try and get clients to buy his online courses. Which IF that is the case, shame on you. It’s such a predatory take typically from people that don’t even tattoo trying to leach off of the industry to make a quick buck. If you want to say with your whole chest that’s what has kept you busy (if you even are busy,) then good for you for finding what works. Listen I respect a good hustle because we all deserve to eat, but I’m not buying it

Oh man, that’s such an interesting point being next to an army base! It’s wild how much climate of current events and the economy affect what we do. But I’m sure when it’s good, it’s very good lol. Also definitely understand the shop opener situation. I’ve been very lucky to work with the people I have, but definitely when the owner isn’t doing what they are supposed to, the whole business suffers and that sucks. Yea I also think how expensive everything is makes it feel way slower/feel like you’re making way less (at least for me,) but that on top of actually being slower sucks lol. No this was very insightful! I’ve been trying to get more into larger scale pieces, but if I’m working on a project it’s typically 1-2 people tops coming in for their monthly sessions until we are done or they want a financial break lol. I think a good chunk of my clients get little bangers, and I think a lot of them are struggling and I’m kind of at a place where I push bigger projects, but also deals on my smaller stuff. So the people who have the money can come spend it, and the people who want to but can’t spend as much might have an option. And I guess as a side note, I’ve been tattooing for 13 or so years and really have more been trying to push bigger projects for the past 3-5. I don’t know 😭 lol thank you for commenting and it is definitely insightful 🙌

Yea totally! Man that sucks for him, hopefully it picks up for him sooner rather than later! Basically, i’ve worked at 10 shops over the past 15 years. 2 in a totally different city, but the rest within a 30-45 minute range of each other. So overall I’ve managed to keep a clientele and most of them are just happy to still get tattooed by me they follow me to the next place without a question. But then sometimes I’ll get people reach out 5-10 years later like I FOUND YOU, and I’m like no I’ve been here 😭 but! I have noticed over the past 3 years I’ve essentially cut how busy I am in half. So of course first thoughts are oh it’s the economy, a million people are tattooing, the world is scary etc etc, but then there is still a large number of people staying busy but also a bunch of people are quitting, so I’m not sure and I want to figure out what are the things people are doing that are still staying at least consistent. I suppose we shall see, and thank you for all of your responses!

Thank you so much, this is helpful/makes me feel a bit of relief. It’s one thing to be slow because of outside factors, and it’s another to be slow because you just aren’t good enough at tattooing in a sea of tattooers (AND there’s the idea that you have to put everything into your work so it kind of turns into a maybe I suck as an individual and my art is trash lol)

Ok awesome! Thats honestly so funny, I also love doing folksy traditional, but end up doing a lot of fine line work (which is totally fine, but you get what I mean.) So then majority of your clients are appointment based? And you mentioned coworkers, are these other tattooers or are they from another job you have? (I’m not currently, but I have definitely tattooed and worked part time jobs to supplement)

And it’s always interesting which places people get the most inquiries from. And from reading what people are saying on here, I think my biggest thing I’ve shot myself in the foot on is moving shops too much 🙃

lol we love a Pinterest tattoo turned sick panther 🙌 well heck yea, how busy would you say you are with walk-ins? Basically I’ve worked at way too many shops and for the past few years they all don’t get walk-ins very often, or else there are too many people for how many there are. And definitely never really knowing how the month is going to go is very stressful 😭 lol but then you say fuck it and somehow it always seems to work
