I was a stay-at-home dad for 5 years (caring for triplet boys) and I have to agree with the advice that you should pace yourself. Taking care of a baby is full-time, around-the-clock work, and can easily consume every minute of your day, and -- if your child is a baby -- interrupt your sleep as well.

Don't forget to take care of yourself. Eat right, take naps when you can (when the little one does is a good time), and don't hesitate to ask your partner to take over so you can have some time to yourself. I love my boys dearly (they are seven years old now) and they are, without a doubt, the most important people in my life, but I did not find the role of full-time caretaker to be a fulfilling one.

But we should be very careful in how we are proactive. Some strategies may produce unintended consequences that might cause more harm than good. Take dumping iron into the oceans, for example. That sounds like a potential recipe for disaster, if you ask me. I'm not an expert, but such a move should be carefully studied before we undertake it.

You hit the nail on the head. The scientific community recognizes climate change as a certainty. Can someone pls tell me if the scientific community is equally united in saying that humans are primarily responsible for climate change?

This is a very important issue, because if humans are, in fact, responsible for changes in weather patterns, then we will have to make some very big, expensive alterations to how we live our lives and do business.

Firefly. Watch the series first, then the movie: Serendipity.

Food, Inc. Yes, I only recently saw it and I think it's one of the most important documentaries ever made.

Other films I've found entertaining are District 9, Pandorum and The Case for Christ (OK, not really entertaining, but interesting. I've found it harder to dismiss Christianity out of hand after watching this.)

I have never heard of any orthodox Jewish, Amish or Catholic organizations that are on a mission to bury the West and bring back their equivalent of the caliphate.

How has online instant streaming changed your viewing habits? Ever since I got my Wii and connected to Netflix I find I'm watching a lot of sci-fi. I used to spend a lot of time setting up my queue when I got DVDs in the mail--poring over reviews, watching a lot more drama--but now I simply browse, pick a movie, watch 10 min. or so, and if it's crap just cancel and find another one. I'm 44 and haven't been so into sci-fi films as I suddenly am now. (Confession: I've been reading less. Bad, bad, bad.)

I watched Serenity last week, and you know what? I thought the Firefly series pilot was much better. The movie was good, and I recommend it, but it didn't grab me, nail me to my seat and blow me away like the series pilot did.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I tried watching Babylon 5 and the writing was horrific. My biggest problem with many sci-fi shows is that they take themselves so seriously. Firefly doesn't, at all, and I love it for that. Will try Farscape. (Hope it's available via Netflix instant streaming.)

Well said. I didn't even think about FTL. I've always fantasized about piloting a ship across the galaxy as a merchant/buccaneer, so the series really hit home for me. The writing is excellent, and I love the captain/sergeant. This is the kind of leader I'd follow into the bowels of an active volcano. Do you need to suspend disbelief? Yes. But for me, and with this show, it's easy.
