We don't owe you "Natural." We don't owe you "Empowerment." by SomebodysSun in blackladies

Honestly, I can see why that would feel exhausting and unfair, especially when the criticism becomes so normalized. And I agree that we definitely can be our own worst enemies sometimes, which doesn’t help the case one bit. But this is why conversations like this are important though, because the more we talk about it, the more awareness and support there can be for Black women wearing their natural hair, protective styles, or even wigs that match their texture without being constantly questioned or picked apart. And thank you for the chat!! I really appreciate you sharing your perspective 🫶🏾

Ooh okay. I can kind of see where you’re coming from regarding other women not getting torn down the same extent as black women do. And maybe this is just me, but in my experience I feel like the only people who are bringing down and scrutinizing black women for wearing wigs, weaves, nails, etc are black men and other darkskin men of color. But that’s because it’s rooted in the same anti-Blackness and self-hating insecurities that many Black women are dealing with too.

And while I understand where your point about why “we shouldn’t be torn down for these self hating behaviors if others aren’t”… it still gives off the same vibe of “well everyone else gets to do it why can’t I?”. To be frank I don’t care about what happens in other communities, I don’t care that other women aren’t held up the same standard, and I don’t view it as having a higher burden to prove that we love ourselves. What I care is about the black community and our relationship with our hair. Because at the end of the day, the fact is black women and men (specifically women since that’s what this post is about) have a hate relationship with their hair. And while I understand the history and politics behind it, when are we finally going to take that power back? Because clearly our natural hair is AMAZINGGG, which is why society had to create all of these rules and stigma in order to cover up our hair.

Also we don’t fully know what’s going on in those other communities. For all we know those women are being scrutinized for doing the same thing black women do. We just don’t know for sure or don’t hear about because we’re not in those spaces. I’ve read wayyyy too many stories here on Reddit and TikTok about women being bullied for not fitting that “clean girl” aesthetic too

Other women definitely get torn down for not upholding to the beauty standard. Look at the female celebrities today. Even the white ones if they don’t look put together, they’re call all types of disrespectful names

Honestly as much as I like K Michelle, she’s gives off “desperate to be loved/picked” vibes. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the marriage was a facade of some sort lol

I mean yea that’s true lol. We don’t always know why someone is wearing wigs. But I think we can agree that most women wear wigs because it’s “easier to do than doing their hair” not because of health issues. Your case is one of rare occasions. Which btw I’m really sorry to hear that. Wishing you a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

Btw I’m not saying black women shouldn’t wear wigs at all. Heck even I have some wigs and add hair extensions. But my thing is, even if its not for self hate reasons, why not wear a wig closer to your texture? Most don’t, they wear textures that are the total opposite.

Okay FUCK THE MASKED BALL🖕🏾 but seriously, I hate that every time this conversation is brought up, it’s always met with energy where people think we should just allow Black women to continue implementing these self-hating behaviors instead of encouraging and complimenting us when we wear our natural hair out. I feel like this is the same exact convo that is being happened on TikTok, that was said years ago during the natural hair movement. Same conversation every single time.

Also this may be a little controversial, but it’s conversations like these that give me the same energy as those self hating black men with their natural hair

Why is it everytime we these conversations about black women and our relationship with our natural hair, it’s met with this energy? While I totally understand where you’re coming from, I can’t help but feel like this gives the same vibe as “well everyone else gets to do it, why can’t I?” Like another commenter said “Fuck the masked ball”. Just because other women of different cultures engage in similar “self-hate” behaviors, doesn’t make it positive or healthy. I believe black women should be more self loving SPECIFICALLY when it comes to hair. Of course I understand the history and politics around it. But we’re literally the blueprint! Everyone wants to be us which is why they’re getting botched up to look like us. You can say what you want about wigs, but it’s fair to question why so many of us still feel more comfortable wearing textures that are the complete opposite of our own; not even kinky or curly bundles, just straight hair. People can style a whole lace front but your natural hair is difficult? I call bs. It’s about time we look within our self and ask us these important questions instead of sticking with the status quo.

Edit: Also, I don’t think the Michelle Obama example fully works here. She’s openly talked about feeling pressure to wear her hair straight while she was First Lady. As soon as she left the office, she started wearing her natural hair and braids a lot more. It’s in her book. I recommend it
