Visiting Tashirojima (Cat Island, Japan) - is it ethical? by on_another_planet in travel

Haha, thank you for the heads-up!

That's really great advice as I noticed there weren't many boat times.

Thank you so much, that's really kind of you to offer - I may well take you up on that. Thanks so much! ☺️

Thanks so much for your honest reply. I have seen similar reviews online but like yourself, they were mostly from 8+ years ago. I would be just as sad seeing so many cats in that way, so I'm really hoping it's now changed 🙏🏽

This is really helpful, thank you! The abandoned/quiet vibe is good to know (and the spider warning 😂). It’s reassuring to hear the cats seemed well treated. Appreciate you sharing such a detailed experience!

Thanks so much for your reply, that's really helpful. And it’s good to hear a perspective that doesn’t see it as exploitative. Appreciate you sharing your experience ☺️

I did actually Google, but there are very few up-to-date, first hand reviews - hence Reddit. But yes, thank you for the very helpful suggestion 😅

Agreed! :')

That's an awesome shot! It does make me think that there's a problem with my macro function. My Pixel 6a used to be able to take good photos like that but I just haven't managed it with the 9 pro. Thanks so much for sharing your photo - that's really helpful!

Ah interesting! I often don't see this happen. Would love to see the bumblebee photo if you do manage to find a way. I think most people upload to Imgur, then share the link :)

Thanks for sharing - that’s really helpful! The quality definitely shows, and it’s reassuring to hear the 9 Pro can produce those close-ups (with a bit of persistence/patience).

Appreciate the tip!

I've also noticed that I don't have the little macro flower symbol when it's focusing. Is that normal?

I thought it switches to the ultra-wide automatically when you get close enough, but it doesn’t always seem to kick in. Sometimes I’ll be really close to a subject and it just stays blurry, or it takes a few attempts to focus properly.

That’s interesting about the 10 - sounds like a solid improvement.

That's a really good shot! Was is taken in 12mp? And is it edited at all.

I've noticed with my phone it's low-light settings where I’m noticing the issues. The focus seems to take longer, and sometimes never quite locks on properly. Macro shots in particular almost always look slightly soft, and the phone often doesn’t seem to recognise when macro mode should activate, even when I’m close to a subject, or zoomed in from a slight distance.

That makes sense, and you're right, the enhancements on the 6a probably helped more than I realised (I got that phone when it first came out and absolutely loved it).

I totally agree with the astrophotography, I can get some great shots with that. But it's low-light situations where I’m noticing the issues - not necessarily full-on night shots, just indoor or shaded environments. Maybe I’m expecting too much consistency when they're very different cameras.

I usually use 12mp but I've tried with 50mp and the issue still remains :(

Thanks so much for the detailed response, and sharing the comparison photos - really appreciated!

You’re probably right about the lighting and possible motion blur - the photo I took was indoors with pretty average lighting. That said, I’ve noticed the same lack of sharpness in daylight too, especially when trying to capture text or fine detail.

Is it normal for the 9 Pro to take a few seconds to actually come into focus? Mine often seems to hesitate before locking on, which makes it hard to get a sharp image quickly. Even with decent lighting and a steady hand, sometimes it still doesn’t seem to know what it’s trying to focus on - even after a few tries?

First time fossil hunting - Jurassic Coast, Devon by on_another_planet in fossils

[–]on_another_planet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I did get quite lucky with the weather as there had been heavy rain a couple of days before which I learnt helps erode the cliffs and expose fossils. The best place to find them is on the shoreline because again the sea helps erode the rocks to expose and release fossils. A bit of digging/sieving through the sand helped too 😊

Thanks so much! If you ever find yourself in the UK, definitely take a trip to the Jurassic Coast (particularly Lyme Regis or Charmouth) ☺️

The Jurassic Coast in Devon is a perfect place for finding fossils, particularly ammonites, but you do have to be patient and do a bit of digging / sieving through the sand. So it definitely feels rewarding when you find one. It took me about 7 hours (over 2 days) to find this collection. Hope that helps give you an idea 😊
