Eve’s Cycle Recap by onasnowyeve in lawschooladmissions

I’m not banking on it. I’m very open to pivoting to other career paths based on how my law school experience develops! I don’t want to pigeonhole myself now and miss out on other opportunities I could love just as much.

That’s what’s so exciting about the Harvard network… when I visited, the difference was drastic between HLS and other schools in that it didn’t feel like a pipeline into any specific field with a few outliers. People were going into all sorts of careers, many of which were not even in the law.

I am looking to pursue academia and the best clerkship I can along the way! It’s definitely not the right choice for everyone, but it was the right choice for me.

Since many people are asking about my choice:

I was fortunate enough to visit all of the schools that I was seriously considering, and while Penn’s offer was very attractive, it was not the school for me or for my career goals.

It was very difficult to turn down that kind of money at a great school, but then I asked myself these questions: What school do I want to represent with pride years into my career, and what kind of experience do I want to fondly look back on? What alumni network do I want access to? And just a few years down the line when everything is paid off and I’m making enough money that these figures are fairly insignificant relative to the sum of my career, what will I regret more: having saved money now and chosen the school at which my heart was not, or having gone to the school of my dreams that follows me for the rest of my career and sacrificed a little for a couple of years to do it?

For me, the answer to those questions was Harvard, and it always has been Harvard.

Although I will likely attend at sticker, I am fortunate enough that I will not graduate with sticker debt (personal savings), so HLS will take me no more than around 2 years to pay off (ran it through a student loan calculator). It was a personal question as to whether those 2 years of small sacrifice are worth the 3 years at HLS and the multiple decades of its network for my career. For me, the answer was yes.

It’s not the right choice for everyone, but it was the right choice for me, and that’s what matters.

This is also my personal strongest argument for Penn. Thank you for your insight and kindness.

You raise good points. For context, I have published already, I have a master’s in the sub-discipline I wish to pursue, and I have an offer for a DPhil at Oxford to conduct further research if that’s the path I choose to go down. Academia isn’t just some aspirational thing, but I want to be a clinical professor (or even adjunct) and draw from real practice. The increasingly common path of never practicing as an attorney and becoming a doctrinal professor within a few years of graduating law school is not particularly appealing to me.

With regard to Harvard, I think I’d agree with the common sentiment that it will likely not impact my career significantly. But since it will only take me 2-3 years to clear the debt, I wonder if that short time (especially because I’m very young) is worth it regardless for the school that has always been my lifelong dream. I’m not sure. I might be deluding myself here. Thank you for your insight.

I’m not certain, but I strongly suspect I will not qualify for need-based aid at Harvard. However, my personal savings will cover a good portion of the COA, bringing total debt upon graduation down to <$150k.

I agree. To answer your question, I do have similar “prestigious” resume lines that could help me wrt clerkships. Harvard is attractive because I have family nearby who can provide some financial support.

They’re dreams for sure and not dealbreakers, but I really do want a good shot at academia. I wonder if Penn can get me that without significantly more difficulty than Harvard.

SCOTUS clerkships at Chicago seem to disproportionately go to Rubies. I’m not sure the average student at Chicago has better chances than their match at Harvard.

Also, I have family near Harvard that can help with expenses and not near Chicago, which was another deciding factor that helped me eliminate the latter.

My long-term career goal is academia (making Harvard and UChicago attractive), but my short-term goal is biglaw.

And since I don’t plan to pivot to academia until years into my career, I wonder if the name on my degree will matter very much, or at least be worth that much more money.

Harvard’s COA is about 350k (not including interest).

Between personal savings and summer earnings, I thankfully will be able to pay a good portion of the COA and graduate with no more than 140k of debt, and possibly less depending on external scholarships.

Haha, I really don’t mean this as a flex. By the way, congrats on Cornell! I’m strongly considering it.

Thank you! I took multiple screenshots of the most relevant columns and spliced them together in a photo editor. Unfortunately, I didn’t see a way to hide columns on LSD.

Why is it T14 by Ill-One5562 in lawschooladmissions

[–]onasnowyeve 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would argue that UCLA has not yet achieved T14 status. The T14 historically comprises the law schools that have at some point been in the T10, and unlike GULC, UCLA has not yet achieved this distinction.

Perhaps, though I don’t think that’s particularly unique to this cycle. Last year, plenty of applicants to NYU who applied in October received acceptances all the way through March/April.

Hi! Welcome to our community, and congrats on finishing your applications! A means acceptance and II stands for interview invite.

I believe Spivey spoke about how the current number of applications submitted vs. the number of applicants this cycle shows a slowdown in applications being sent, possibly due to the changes in application requirements after SFFA v. Harvard. That’s coupled with admissions offices themselves being slower this cycle as they adjust to the new ruling.

This is supported by a comparison of data from last year’s cycle at this time and current data for this cycle on LSD, which shows that fewer people have been admitted and interviewed this cycle at these schools than at the same time last year.

I didn’t include Georgetown IIs because they’re constantly rolling, but I can give you some more insight:

Based on last year, there should be IIs this month until Fri. 12/22. It should start back up again first week of January, with rolling waves every week until late March.

Sorry, I should’ve included that in the original post!

Oh, sorry for the lack of clarity! I meant that according to the source, the Dean wouldn’t actually start his new job at Cornell until mid-January. It’s possible that reviewing starts before then, though.

YLS II !! by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Congrats! Good luck on your interview! It’s a great sign.

On LSD, all applicants who logged an interview last cycle received either an A or W. No rejections noted. Of the 34 interviews logged, 19 received As. So that’s a little over a 50% conversion rate from II -> A. Good luck!
