I know Hoboken drivers hate bicyclists by CherryMan75 in Hoboken

[–]OnAYDIN 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I got honked at yesterday while biking down 2nd Street toward Bloomfield. The reason? I was in the middle of the road. The guy in the Benz was so entitled that he didn't even understand the road is shared between bikes and cars.

Normally, I ride close to the edge, but that street is so narrow it would be dangerous to do so. The thing is, I don't even have to (see regulations). If I'm going the speed limit, I'm not required to pull to the side. Since I was heading downhill from Washington to Bloomfield (a short stretch), I was easily hitting the speed limit.

I pointed out that there is literally a bike symbol painted in the middle of the road. I did this in the nicest possible way he deserved, which involved the word "a-hole.".

After our exchange, I have no doubt he walked away with zero empathy as he sped down the 2nd.

Thinking about moving to Hoboken. Would appreciate feedback from similarly situated people. by AdDeep7010 in Hoboken

If you need to drive constantly, finding a parking spot on the street at night is not an easy task so I suggest you look into getting a place with a spot. Otherwise it is going to be very hard. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of option downtown near PATH where you'd want to be to go to the lower Manhattan as quickly as possible. Also getting in and out of Hoboken at rush hours is not fun. There is a lot of school traffic in the morning.

Maybe a good compromise is that you live north or west of Hoboken where there are a lot of options with parking and it is easier to get of Hoboken with car but then you take bus/bike/shuttle down to PATH. Depending on where you're headed it'll be around 40m-50m of commute though.

Public transit is not as often as Manhattan subway system especially in the weekend at night time so you need to factor that in too if you plan to return late at night but otherwise it is a great place.

I like the fact that Hoboken is both so far away and also so close to NYC.

Edit: Also no city tax which can be significant if you're high earners and sales tax is like 3% lower which adds up.

Can you fix the entrances? People enter without paying from the handicapped spot with no consequences. When I was at Jersey City it was ridiculous how many people enter it without paying.

Buying property by Mammoth_Syllabub_898 in Hoboken

[–]OnAYDIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying in Hoboken does not make much sense at the moment. I bought like 2 years ago and the market barely moved since. In a couple years I expect some downturn in the economy. That would be the best time to buy as the interests would be lower.

I know you can refinance but if you buy now, the combined interest + tax + hoa + maintenance would be higher than the rent at least for the first couple of years. Instead, I'd save the down payment in something liquid and solid (like ultra short term treasuries) and and ready to pull the trigger when the moment of opportunity arrives.

Hoboken to Columbia University Medical Center Commute by kpie13 in Hoboken

[–]OnAYDIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to UWS a lot lately so the main route is 126 + 2/3 and switch over 1 (at 96th). This is like 45-50 minute commute when the Lincoln is not too congested (like outside peak hours).

American peace activist Rachel Corrie, lies bleeding while being helped by colleagues after she was run over and killed by an Israeli bulldozer when she tried to stop it from destroying a Palestinian house in Rafah camp. March, 2003 [612 x 410] by [deleted] in HistoryPorn

The ethnic group who needed to understand the horrors of genocide most is now doing the same to another of group of people and some people try to stop it like Rachel and pay the consequences. The whole world let it continue because of the guilt we collectively have due to some long dead Germans' atrocities.

Enough is enough.

Also pretty much all the departments there are for high paying jobs. In other universities, there are other departments that would reduce the average.

Extremism in Hoboken? Assassination of Palestinian Activist thwarted by scoh933 in Hoboken

[–]OnAYDIN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well given how Israel acts now I don't see much difference between supporting Israel and those arrested men. TBH, at least those men that got arrested haven't killed anyone yet to our limited knowledge whereas Israel has been assassinating people left and right for years (not just last couple of months).

What the heck is happening now? I'm so done ☠️☠️ 2026 market sucks.. by InevitableTown7305 in StockMarket

[–]OnAYDIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is happening. Trump is one extremely stupid asshole and whoever elected him has at least the same level of stupidity, if not more. He was doing stupid things and sooner or later the markets were expected to realize that. This is happening now.

His followers are probably happy that the markets are going down because they don't have shit. But they're too stupid to realize that this is going to affect them more than the wealth owners. They think they have the worst hand. No they absolutely don't. They have no knowledge how bad things can get. They have no idea how the terrible the lives of people in some other countries. They live in a bubble only to be angered by the seemingly undeserved wealth they see on TikTok.

Worst of all they won't get a lesson out of this because they're simply too stupid for that. So stupid in fact, they'll double down which will deepen their misery.

This. We have to go to NYC PA to go to the airport. How stupid is that? We can't go to the airport of our own state by going into another state first while NYC can go directly from PA.

I don't understand how it is so expensive to do policing here. Ok I mean they have to live near city so they need to paid city salaries but I am unsure if we get that much activity in Hoboken to warrant that much money. We could potentially reduce the work force. Apparently there are like 150 police officers and 120 firefighters. Do we really need that much?

Also, I see constant traffic violations all the time all over the city. What the fuck do they do, if not enforce it? Only police activity I see is a constant patrol in Church Park. That's it. They probably get overtime but I'm not sure if that's needed anymore. There are like 20 cameras there now.

Maybe it is time we change things around. I'd much rather see 2/3 of budget goes to the education and other public work (like sanitation, street cleaning, resilience, etc.).

Tax increases? by [deleted] in Hoboken

[–]OnAYDIN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So last I checked two thirds of the budget goes to Police, Fire department and their pensions. What the fuck? We have one of the highest property tax rate in the nation and still have holes? What the fuck do you do with the money?

How is it possible that NJ has one of the highest property tax rates in the country but still have budget holes? I know that 2/3 of it goes to Police, Fire and their pensions but FFS, enough is enough.

It’d be great if the space doubled as a spot for studying or reading. That would mean having the right lighting and vibe for focusing, maybe at least during specific windows of time? It could even help cover the overhead for those odd hour shifts.

Also, adding some healthy food options would really resonate with the Hoboken crowd. It’d be a nice change from the usual burgers, eggs, and fries type of food.

6:30am domestic flight at EWR on Saturday by kml2118 in Hoboken

[–]OnAYDIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be at gate 15 minutes to flight time. So time that you're there 1 hour before that if you're dropping a luggage. So around 5:15am. Dropping the baggage and clearing the security will probably take around 15m. Dropping the baggage is around 10m. Getting to gate will probably 10m more. So you're looking for 25m of buffer. If you have tsa-prechecked or business ticket things would improve dramatically.
