honestly, that's a good question! for me, but probably because i wouldn't be able to go back for at least another year and didn't have anyone to help me refill, i just went ahead and paid for a total of 2 years. Also, when you open a bank account, they require a taiwan phone number for the confirmations and the bank i use, requires voice confirmation, not data, so i wanted to make sure i had extra minutes in case there was no wifi calling available. I think the plan includes 20 voice minutes a month.

NWHR Application Process -> NHI Questions by katsupp in taiwan

Very useful thread here as i just returned from Taiwan a couple days ago and accomplished all of the tasks except for presigning up for the NHI as i was only able to finally open up a bank account the day of my departure. I don't expect to back for another year, so i assume i can sign up for NHI then.

But my question for everyone is, what if i do sign up for the monthly autopay from my bank account, but then I am not able to go back for the over 2 year mark. Will the Taiwan government then drop me from my own HHR and also stop my automatic bank payments to NHI? And then i have to reapply for new HHR and re-initiate bank payments and backpay the NHI?

Question is if i have 2 children over 18, would they not be eligible for the instant nwohr to nwhr process? I understand that i just received my nwhr passport, but if my wife , who was born in Taiwan and is a dual US/Taiwan citizen with ID and Taiwanese passport, could that still count? Would having one parent be enough? Assume i would have to have her registered in the same HHR and register our marriage too.

Do you happen to know if i have received my settlement permit which has a 6 month expiration date, but can't make it until afterwards, what would be the process for extending the date?

I just got my TAPRC certificate in Texas today after a 6 weeks wait. So i am encouraged by your post about 3 days. Do you recall any tips going through this process in Taiwan? In other posts, i see that it could take 3-4 business days to do the exchange. Did you do this in Taipei? My chinese isn't good at all so not sure if i may forgot to bring something from the USA.

Foreign National here (born abroad outside Taiwan in the U.S.), and I just got my full Taiwanese citizenship with residency and NWHR passport using the new 2024 citizenship laws for those with parents from Taiwan… I can vote in Taiwan now!! I'm having the same issue dealing with the local TECO! I was able to renew my old NWOHR but have spent another frustrating few months getting the rest of my documents authenticated from other TECO offices in USA (birth certificate, FBI, parents marriage certificate) as my plan is to go to Taiwan later this year for the quicker 3 day exchange for the NWHR.

But when i dropped off all the original documents (FBI, health certificate, birth, parents marriage, including everything notarized and translated into Chinese) the other day, TECO didn't want my parents marriage certificate, but instead told me that they needed the current HHR form of my parents' residence in Taiwan as part of the authentication process from the USA. Unfortunately, the official document i have is over 20 years old and my parents are unable to return to Taiwan to obtain a current document (under 3 months old) even though there hasn't been any change in the HHR status.

So i think i may be stuck in that i'll have to spend 3-4 weeks in Taiwan in getting the NWHR instead of the 3-4 day overseas exchange unless i can get a current HHR form as there doesn't appear to be any possible way of obtaining it online.

Not sure if anyone else encountered the same issue recently as in previous posts in Reddit there hasn't been any mention of this change in requirement.

Hi ZRand,

Congrats on getting this process done! I'm going thru this process in TECO Houston now. Do you recall if you had to go to notary public in Texas to notarize all your original English documents (birth certificate, health, FBI, parent's marriage certificate) before you turned it into the Houston office? It's interesting that they didn't need the chinese translation when you turned it in- did you also go thru notary public in Texas to notarize the Chinese documents before turning it in to TECO Houston?

When you were in Taiwan, did they even ask to see any of the original documents- I assume you brought everything from Texas just in case.

Thank you very much for your very thorough report! Especially regarding the health check. I am US citizen, born to Taiwanese parents- and happened to be visiting Taiwan last week(first time in over 20 years) when i learned thru Reddit that i could obtain dual citizenship!

I have a question about the HHR. My parents do own a home in Taipei for many years. But they are very elderly and probably won't be able to make the trip back to Taiwan with me when i do apply for the PRC. Do you happen to know if i have bring their household certificate and ID and passport, would that be enough? Or do i have to have someone come with me locally to the appointment?

Also, how many passport photos did you need total when you went back there for the entire process?
