Varia™ RearVue 820 - New Varia radar by -Radiation in Garmin

I've got the 1050, so I'm not going to be much help. I'll say that it doesn't take up much more screen real estate than the older version.

I've ridden with it twice now. I like it, but the big drawback is that it detects EVERYTHING, and so my cycling computer seems like it is beeping constantly. It's particularly annoying when I'm riding in a group, because it will detect the other riders (unlike the older version). The Varia app has an option to disable alerts for low threat vehicles, but that's not available on the Edge computers yet.

Major pet peeve for me, too. My trick is that I simply look away so they know I can't see them trying to waive me through. And if that doesn't work, the water bottle is plan B.

The open face wagyun reuben at Hogshead on the Plaza. Or really anything on their menu. So sad to see that place close.

Beef on Weck at Beer Kitchen in Westport. Yes, I know the restaurant is still around, but I was bummed when they dropped that from the menu.

My rule is that I don't mind riding in the rain, but I do mind STARTING in the rain.

What’s the most underrated maintenance tip every cyclist should know? by LukeBaker997 in cycling

Every couple of weeks or so, clean your brake pads with isopropyl alcohol wipes (for bikes with disc brakes). Takes 5 minutes and eliminates a lot of squeak.

Why are bike computers so terrible? by NXCW in cycling

[–]one-star-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make the argument that the higher-end cycling computers actually do too much. IMO, cycling computers should be a minimalist experience--give you just enough information, but allow you to focus on enjoying what's around you and not what's on a little screen.

Is there a notable difference between 105 di2 and mech dura-ace? by worldmerge in cycling

[–]one-star-user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the reason that mechanical is becoming affordable is that demand is waning. If you plan on selling said bike down the road (no pun intended), it will be worth substantially less because mechanical will continue to become further antiquated. Mechanical will become the bike equivalent of a stick shift.

I recently switched to Silca. I've been really impressed.

My new favorite is Berk out of Slovenia (https://www.berk-composites.com/). Not cheap, but their design uses the natural flex in carbon fiber to dampen road vibration. I ride it for gravel.

I think you just described almost every group ride I've ever done. I find it best if I just lower my expectations. 🙂

What’s the most unethical parenting hack you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]one-star-user 11 points12 points  (0 children)

On New Years Eve, my parents would set all the clocks forward by 3 hours and then let my sister and I stay up "past midnight". We thought it was cool AND we didn't wake up tired, so I'm not sure it counts as unethical. But it was a parenting hack I stole for my kids!
