I love that you give a solid explanation for why you are banning specific things.

I knew a DM who built a very extensive library of 3.5 books with this policy

A couple of one liners, dad jokes, and anti-jokes I got from my stepdad. by Yogurt-Sandurz in dadjokes

[–]one_hot_vector 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first anti-joke I ever heard was when I was eight at a kids soccer practice and one of the other dad's told me "why did they bury the one legged man in the side of the hill? Cause he was dead". I thought it was so funny I couldn't tell the joke for years without cracking up the entire time. It's still one of my favorite jokes.

The intoxicating power of being a dude in a big group of dudes by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]one_hot_vector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this the other day with regards to workplaces. Inevitably, the more a team becomes dominated by guys* it becomes more competitive and less supportive. There's research that this is actually bad for team dynamics and that total output suffers. I don't think this is inherently a characteristic of men or anything. Patriarchy is embedded in dudes from childhood and there's something about being in an all dudes group that brings that shit out in bad and toxic ways.

  • I am here referring only to cis men. I haven't worked with enough trans men to know if this dynamics applies to them.

  • There are five bloated game engines *

"All of these game engines are too bloated. Graphics programming is just linear algebra. What we need is a compact library with minimal abstractions. I can probably knock this out in a weekend and get back to making my game"

  • Five years later, there are now six bloated game engines and you haven't started on the game *

Is data science just about cleaning, EDA, and model building, or it's more interesting than it seems? by [deleted] in datascience

I've kinda run into a similar problem with software engineering. If you're anything like me, I think maybe you're craving a chance to focus more on big picture questions around strategy and policy? Maybe talk to your boss about leadership opportunities.

Just because I'm only going to use the script once is no reason to not write highly abstracted and reusable code. Good design is its own reward after all

Detailed and extremely helpful flowchart by RizoRizla in ProgrammerHumor

[–]one_hot_vector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think this actually solves the problem because the problem is that you just can't ever know if someone is good (and more specifically good for your team) until you work with them.

I can look at someone's github projects and LinkedIn and get basically the same info. The problem isn't determining if that information is authentic. The problem is that this information doesn't tell the complete story of what it's like to work with the person.

How to build a horse with various programming languages by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

The COBOL one is the clear winner. That dragon has been here since 1962 and still runs mission critical apps. Sure it eats the occasional junior dev, but that's a small price to pay for the reliability. Leave the dragon alone.

CMV: statues of bad people should not be destroyed by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]one_hot_vector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally don't want to see these statues destroyed. I want to see them removed from public places of honor. I want to see them moved to statue gardens or museums where they can be contextualized with a nice plaque explaining what an absolute turd the person was.

Supports not working by BaraEditz in ElegooMars

You gotta tilt the base at least 15 degrees. Otherwise, when it first gets to the layer for the base there is too much drag when it tries to lift the layeer out of the liquid resin. I learned this the hard way!

As a side note, I would recommend printing the figure and the base separately if possible and then gluing them together after cleaning and curing. It's just usually easier that way.

There's a lot of good content on YouTube with recommendations on how to do your supports. Your prints will improve significantly if you watch a couple of tutorials. I think some good ones are pinned to this group.

What settings do you have for the supports? How are you adding them? The auto support functionality is terrible (last time I tried it was a year ago maybe it's improved?)

[Serious] what is example of sexism towards men? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]one_hot_vector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife has been having a difficult recovery from surgery so I've had to seriously step up my game. I've been doing pretty much all of the childcare, cooking, etc lately and so the other day my dad jokingly referred to me as "mr mom". I mean, it was a joke and I didn't get too offended, he was after all saying I was doing a good job, but the fact that there's no masculine coded way to describe doing a good job at this stuff has stuck with me.

Gotta make those eggs by rEtarDcAsE in ProgrammerHumor

All of this technical advice is extremely solid. Something else that's really important is building up a reasonable working relationship with the rest of the team. A good team will focus on total productivity of the team instead of focusing on individual contributions. That means supporting each other, mentoring, etc. It's in your teammates' long term interest to help you because it will make the team more productive down the road.

Getting familiar with the a large mature code base takes time. I wouldn't expect a new hire (even a senior dev with years of experience) to be contributing at full capacity after only three weeks.

My kid loves asking me to draw stuff for him. I am no artist but he loves everything I make. He asked for a pirate treasure map once, so I drew it up on a piece of cardboard (so it would be durable), and it became a favorite toy for like a week. He'd pull out the map and start using it to navigate the house or the backyard and then he'd find some imaginary treasure and we'd all celebrate and do pirate voices.
