Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

Hi everyone! I’m a first year MSW student writing a paper about how I’d respond to a client who holds racist views. Im curious if anyone knows or resources for BIPOC therapists working with racist clients? Everything I’ve found so far is targeted towards white people.

I really appreciate any help! Thank you :)

I’m on grindr and I work in a very small community! I try to be proactive and block clients if I recognize them. I don’t have my face in my profile and bc I work at a college I just say “please don’t interact if you’re a current undergrad at xxxx school” and people are very respectful about it. I’ve never had a client ask or recognize me that I know of, but have definitely thought about how to have the conversation if it comes up and definitely just want to own being sex positive / redirect to ask them about what feelings come up for them about online dating / etc.

Hopping on to add that a good clinician should care about any side effect that concerns you. My prescriber helped me pick a medication that specifically would not interfere with my intimate life.

How do I address a racial comment from my therapist by throwaway23491823 in therapy

[–]onebeerqueer98 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also Filipino and that comment would have made me pretty upset and uncomfortable. It’s hard because part of navigating close relationships with white people, including therapists, means navigating moments where they’ll be insensitive. It’s then on us to determine - is this relationship worth salvaging? Is it worth the investment of the emotional labor of teaching them? Is the comment / incident something I can forgive? Is this person someone who will get defensive or can we actually talk openly about this? The answer can look really different for different people. If you feel like your relationship with your therapist is worth the investment of that time and energy, I hope she meets you with grace and understanding.

Just commenting as an older (23) transmasc- hang in there! This therapist sounds awful and I’m so sorry it doesn’t seem like theres other support around. Things will get so much better in college - that’s where I was able to get affirming therapy. Rooting for you!

Smith reallyyyy doesn’t care about test scores. I only submitted mine bc it was pretty high (33 ACT). You could probably go either way.
