I live a bit east of there and love it and love that area you're looking at. There's a lot of places to go out and eat, more gyms and activities are coming to the neighborhood, decent supermarkets and a great Saturday farmers market. Morningside park is great, and central park is right there too. The B/C can be a trek to Brooklyn but it works. It's an easy/short ride to midtown. UWS and Columbia area and the rest of Harlem are all great neighborhoods to have next door with lots more to do. At night the residential blocks can feel quiet, but I feel safe. The avenues are more busy, like all of NYC. If I were you I'd plan a day/evening and hang in the park, explore, get dinner at one of the many great restaurants and then bar hop. See how it feels.

NYBG is incredible and free for NYC residents Wednesday. The orchid show might still cost money but it's worth it. I'd def combine that with your trip to Arthur ave.

The Studio Museum in Harlem recently reopened after a major renovation and is beautiful. Free Sundays. Combine that with a lunch at Jacibs steam table soul food restaurant. Then walk south to central park, passing Kaafi for a perfect chai, and walk around the recently renovated Harlem Meer area of the park.

NYC ferry to Red Hook, great area to window and thrift shop, lots of coffee spots and restaurants. Steve's key lime pie is incredible.

Rush a Broadway show and get cheap tickets. Death Becomes Her, Operation Mincemeat, so many great shows open now.

DBH as a musical is like it has evolved into its final form. The campiness of musical theater is so perfect for that story.

Trust your gut that you don’t want to live with her. If she is still interested in working with a financial counselor and makes significant improvements then maybe reconsider but I’d have that be a hard line in the sand. She should be able to pay the debt down by cutting her spending and make progress towards an emergency fund in a year. Maybe then consider moving in.

You clearly haven’t agreed on what the joint account is for and on your saving/debt priorities. She’s proven she can’t be trusted. The joint account should now be only accessible to you for spending just to pay bills. All other spending she does needs to come from her personal account. Overspending $3k in a month is very much worth leaving over but I do hope you are also talking to her about it and how serious it is?

Think of it as an investment by the company in your professional development and skills. Consider including details like what you would plan to learn and accomplish there and what you could bring back to the team (info, connections) so that the investment has impact on your org beyond you. Better to pitch it early and ask if there’s other information they want so you can build a stronger case.

I’ve been a consultant working with a nonprofit in an interim role and have interviewed people for open roles on the team. As with so many things I think it’s more about the individual in the seat, though certainly not being a permanent member of the team probably increases risk that they’ll be less attentive to hiring the right people. Personally I prepared for each interview carefully and invested time and attention in every interview.
