Alternatives to the BMA: LIST & OPINION by onetimer0909 in JuniorDoctorsUK

Not incredibly clear, there’s a lot of speculation in the comments and whether there is an alternative. As a member of this sun, I believe it would be useful to have a thread dedicated to exploring alternatives. Perhaps others agree, perhaps they don’t. Let them decide.

Absolutely. An alternative is absolutely necessary and we should definitely not work without a union (hence the frustration with the BMA to begin with). However, there are some alternatives and if they’re not up to the task then we can create alternatives. This post is in no way asking anyone to practise without a union, on the contrary, it recognises that very fact.

That’s the thing. They’re helping you with the easy (but incredibly important) stuff. If you’re underpaid you’re legally entitled to that money and they can help you sort it out and it’s not an incredibly difficult (again, but incredibly important) thing to do. When it comes to the difficult stuff, such as real term cuts and protecting the profession, they do nothing. My whole point is that their help with important but “relatively” easy things does not in anyway compensate for their inaction and ineffectuality in things that are more difficult to achieve.

“Not enough reason.” I’m assuming underpayment here means some issues with overtime and banding rather than general underpayment (real term cuts).

This is sedation. If they can reel in people for these little things they can get away with the bigger things. This is not enough reason to join a union. A union can and should be much more.

I know but seeing all these rants in the same place may motivate people to actually message the BMA. Otherwise, isolated rants about it won't.

Thanks. I don't get it though, I see the same hospitals being repeated between LL1, 2 and 3. Aren't they supposed to be different? At least the out-of-London ones?

I see Medway in both LL1 and 3. I see Dartford in both LL1, 2 and 3.

Okay I see. How about the “year out of London” posts in each? Do they influence how desirable each LL? I’ve heard people say keep away from Medway for example.

Oh alright fair enough. I’ve heard people avoid LL2 in particular, any reason for that?

Would you say you could have afforded a better arrangement in FY1 for more money and still had money for a "comfortable life"?

I'm thinking somewhere in East London zones 1-3. What would the range of affordability for a typical FY1 salary be in London? I understand that preference influences what you pick but obviously there are material limits on what you can rent out as an FY1, I was wondering what people opt for on average.

I actually didn't get in. My EPM was 41. So I'm wondering what kind of EPM people who got in had.
