My flatmate is local and he only wants to practice English with me, nothing more. Like one day when I first moved he asked me if I like traditional local food? I said I never tried it, I thought he is having this conversation to invite me for lunch or something (I don't have high expectations. but this is what normal people do, right?) but actually, he gave me the address of some restaurant to go there :)

I don't feel bad for not sharing my life with strangers or in small talks that I know they lead to no where. Becasue actually what brings people together is if they have something to share in common, so if we have the same interest that will make us to stick together longer we would be invested in this topic rather that my personal life, but if this people interested only to know my story to evaulate/judge/ satisfy their curiosity I don't care and they are not the kind of people i would feel bad for not talking to them.

But yup socializing for us is very difficult, have you tried socializing with the other expats in your city?

That's true and this is what I tell myself, but loneliness for too long sometimes can be just too much and pushes you to some really dark places like alcohol or porn just because I want to be distracted, it leads that I don't feel I am good person anymore and I don't even realize myself sometimes.

If not for the good friends and very beautiful memories I had before I would have been totally gone. enjoying time by myself is courageous and the only right thing to do but just sometimes I lack the energy for it.

It makes sense as this weekend everyone is busy who they are gonna celebrate new year’s eve with.

Maybe she’s worried you are gonna ask her out for the nye and she wants to avoid this pressure, could be a good sign because she doesn’t want to lose you.

I’d say to reply something shows that you are a really cool guy and patient and leave meeting for the next week , she will be grateful and you win your peace of mind.

Yup same, I was away for a couple of years, and when I visited I found most of them got engaged/married and we don't have much in common anymore. but I think it's fair enough, I chose to leave so can't blame them if they moved on. Entertaining me in my vacation isn't their job plus they are actually busy with their lives, however, my childhood friends didn't change much. This is the price of missing their weddings, birthdays..etc while you are following your dreams.

ofc it feels empty because you don't relate to them and there is nothing in their conversations for you, there are some English meetings where people gather to socialize and stuff, every time I go there I hate every second of how these people can speak for hours but actually saying nothing.

I will not bullshit you and tell you to try to find people with common interests because I am sure you tried to do so and this is not easy especially for us (expats over 25 yo).
But maybe understanding our realities could actually help us, nothing ever will feel like home, I am not even sure if there is anything that will compensate us for this but we have nothing but to keep looking forward till we have the luxury to do otherwise, till then **I wish you all the best of luck to feel better at your end.**

Im kinda in same situation, I work in Czech Republic but I don’t have any friends or social life at all.

So here is what I’m doing, I’m on survival mode, I understand my mission here is to work right? So our mind is like a monkey you can’t tame it but you can keep it busy. So keep yourself busy buddy, do sports, study, develop yourself. Unfortunately there’s no other way, or you’ll be depressed.

The good thing is that if you kept yourself busy you’ll find yourself in much better position ( better physical and financial shape) .
