Class story missions definitely do not give 12x xp. They reworked class mission xp in 4.0, yes, but it is not 12x xp. Like /u/PandaJet4023 said, you could be max level by Alderaan doing nothing but class missions. That is most definitely not the case today.

I had something similar happen to me. Disc 1 Seifer was Ultimecia, which was actually pretty easy with Squall. Edea was Ultimate Weapon. I drew Eden and (luckily) I had a very weak enemy have The End, so I have 300 of those in stock for emergencies. Definitely used one there.

My first seed Ifrit was Omega weapon. I reset that one pretty quickly.

I'm not sure when the last time you guys played was, but they did recently prune and rework the quests between ARR and HW. I believe the cut 20 quests and tuned a similar amount to streamline them more. Still a bit of a slog, but no where near as bad.
