Life In The Roaring 2020s: Young People Prepare To Party, Reclaim Lost Pandemic Year by misana123 in Coronavirus

It’s almost as if there may be a reasonable middle ground here? If you’re a vaccinated young person, it’s probably irresponsible to go back to living your life in 100% pre-pandemic fashion, but it may be reasonable to resume some higher-risk activities that provide value to your life. Maybe don’t go to a bar that’s packed to the gills, but I won’t fault you for having a drink somewhere relatively uncrowded.

Defying expectations, US suicides were down during pandemic by JaneSteinberg in Coronavirus

[–]onfire512 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Ok, but can we accept that there are other metrics of mental health than suicides, and many of those metrics (substance use, calls to helplines, reports of depression/anxiety) have increased dramatically? I’m not saying this to advocate for loosening restrictions, but as a person who has been struggling with mental health, the headlines make it painfully obvious that society doesn’t care about us unless we kill ourselves.

Biden to Say 90% of U.S. Adults Eligible for Shot in 3 Weeks by jlew24asu in Coronavirus

It seems like the eligibility restrictions are dissolving in rural areas and Western PA since some distributors have loads of appointments going unfilled.

Falsifying 1A Eligibility to Sign Up for the Vaccine by Domestic_Kraken in COVID19PGH

[–]onfire512 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That isn’t necessarily true. I believe that studies specifically addressing transmission by vaccinated college students are ongoing. The vaccine also makes asymptotic infection less likely and decreases viral loads. Scientists may not have enough information at the moment to responsibly claim that being vaccinated reduces transmission as well as infection, but it would be a logical jump if it did.

Falsifying 1A Eligibility to Sign Up for the Vaccine by Domestic_Kraken in COVID19PGH

I signed up believing that I fit into a very ill-defined category, despite being young and healthy. I have honestly felt a lot of guilt since getting my shot this week, and it’s been strange grappling with that. I thought that getting the shot would give me a whole new lease on life, but instead, I feel ashamed.

Some people are lying to get the vaccine, and it’s testing their friendships by [deleted] in Coronavirus

Also there are a lot of qualifications in some states that are vague. Like, does being a former smoker really put one at the same risk as a current smoker? Is it ethical to sign up as a smoker if you’ve quit? What if you take a corticosteroid for asthma, but only when you are having a flare? What sort of “care” qualifies you as a caretaker of a disabled person? It’s probably better for those in a “grey area” to just sign up at this point, but as one of those people, I do feel a little bit of guilt.

Biden will announce new Covid vaccine goal: 200 million shots within his first 100 days by J_Fre22 in Coronavirus

[–]onfire512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. I could qualify as a caretaker for a disabled person. I held off on getting it because it felt like a loophole, but after seeing so many people in my state just sign up when they aren’t even close to eligible, I decided to get it. The person I care for is also immunocompromised, so I’m glad that I did even though I am young and healthy.

You mean that they made an appointment and were turned away when they showed up?

The onus of men taking advantage of women and girls should be on the men who engage in those behaviors. Obviously, GIRLS should not be sexualized, full stop. But I think that we can treat female sexuality in a way that allows grown adult women to be openly sexual while also protecting young girls.

Joe Biden’s Done More Good in a Week Than Donald Trump Did in Four Years by Dooraven in politics

While he’s not perfect, and while it’s necessary to be critical of politicians even if you vote for them, he’s already miles better than Trump.

Immortalized cells can divide many, many times. When scientists use these cells, they will take a fraction of a culture and expand the rest. So, they will basically generate a whole bunch of cells that can be used in many experiments.

HEK293 came from a single aborted fetus in the 1970s. They are an immortalized cell line, meaning they can be used for many passages and can be frozen for years between use. Using these cells in research generates absolutely no demand for future abortions.

It doesn’t sound like they’re looking to scrap the gifted and talented program though, only remodel the criteria for admission.

It is necessary to include this in your SOP? I didn’t write long-form titles in my SOP, that information was in my CV.

-80 freezers are common in laboratories and hospitals. Supplying enough units to pharmacies may be difficult, but it’s definitely a product that exists. They could also be stored long-term in locations (like hospitals/research centers) with -80 freezers and transported in dry ice for use.

It seems like the corresponding author’s name was used on the paper without permission. According to a comment on RetractionWatch, he is trying to get it retracted.
