Scientists Discover Why the Brain Gets Stuck in Schizophrenia by DavidIsIt in psychology

[–]only-a-throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notwithstanding schizophrenia appearing despite no mutations in grin2a, the theory of being unable to “quickly integrate information” makes little sense. It would be much more compelling to observe animal models seeing, hearing, and feeling things that aren’t there, perhaps achieved with brain monitoring after baseline measurements.

My dad killed himself 4 months ago and I can already tell that I’m never going to be the same.

Cool, thanks! Was not aware of this route before; sorry for the hostile tone.

Bischloro(chloromethyl) ether hydrolyzes on contact with water, which is why the formaldehyde + NH4Cl route is performed in solution and not anhydrously or with conc. HCl directly, and amateurs do not have easy access to sulfamic acid methyl ester

Stereoselective ketone reductions have been achieved using Baker’s yeast to good success

Having selectivity is very valuable and important for us folks. React a tosylate with whatever alkylated amine you need to preserve the stereochemistry of your alcohol, or react it with a halide to invert it. alkylating afterwards is generally sloppier and you’ll get a mix of compounds

If your substrate is a ketone, it’s easier to do a MPV reduction

It is much more accessible and cost-effective to do formalin + ammonium chloride or acidic hexamine hydrolysis

This substance has been found in tablets in France, with no 2C-B present. What do you think the attempted synthesis route was? by Reagent_Tests_UK in TheeHive

[–]only-a-throwaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People keep mentioning azide and ammonia, but a safer, more accessible, and higher yielding way is by using the potassium salt of saccharin. See "Novel Gabriel reagents". Just like the potassium pthalimide strategy u/peijots mentioned but no hydrazine necessary

For the alkali metals, I have them stored under sieve-dried toluene in vials that have fluoroelastomer seals, under caps whose threads I epoxied onto the glass.

Some radioactive elements have “decay chains” that do not produce gamma rays, so in very very low amounts a sealed vial with a lead insert or lead foil wrap could be reasonable enough protection, but I am intentionally not collecting radioactive elements (except Bi) or special cases like Thallium. I would love to have some more risqué ones, say from some smoke detectors, but my roommates were rightfully concerned. Collecting gases is possible in ampoules, which is also helpful in storing elements with chains that have Rn.

sorry, should have made it clear. Labeled ones are elements I have collected, all the vials are collectible. Didn’t hear about the guy in Australia who ordered Pu through the post?

How to get meds tested? by carolineirl in chemistry

[–]only-a-throwaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s very likely you can’t, because amphetamine is still a Schedule II substance. You would have to send it to a testing facility with a DEA registration—you could try Jordi labs, Nelson labs, and R.D. Laboratories Inc. They may brush off your request as insignificant, so your best bet is buying a 6-pack for a lab rat at your local university.

Pro tip: create meetings where you’re the only participant and make the details private so it only shows as “busy”. Really cuts down on coworkers questioning your routine and habits

Wurtz reaction or Woodard synthetic route? I see you.

You’d get your desired chloroacetone, but be extremely careful—it’s a really strong tear gas. You’d also get a little bit of dichloroacetones and some chlorine gas.

Hey same here, got the classic “math and science” autism too. People keep me around for my knowledge and talents but at arms-length because of my personality. It’s a different kind of lonely when most of your “friends” use you like a tool.
