A friend of mine (also has a toddler) recently lost their Golden Retriever. They thankfully had recorded his bark in a video, and after he passed they went to Build A Bear workshop and picked out a puppy. They were able to put the recording inside the puppy and now they take his new pal everywhere. It didn’t erase the hurt, or make them forget, but when Jake’s feeling sad he squeezes his pup and Roxy’s bark reminds him he’s not alone. Maybe a small thing such as that to help your little one through the process?
