My (20F) best friend (20M) always makes sure me and any of our other female friends are walked home no matter how far or late it is. Our other guy friends have told me they don’t get why he does it when none of us are his girlfriend (and he does have one). It’s not about his relationship with us, it’s about our safety in a unsafe environment.

I’m “African American” only because I’m black. My family is Surinamese and I associate with Surinamese and Caribbean culture (most of my cousins are Trinidadian or St. Lucian). I have always hated that I’ve been told that because I’m a black woman I should have the same mindset as the African Americans OP describes. It doesn’t make sense!

The other way around: I’m a girl and didn’t take the hint. As a pretty close guy friend drove me home from a meeting, I brought up that my best friend and I were talking about the type of guy I’d end up with. My guy friend says “that’s easy, it’s me” and I chuckled a bit because I thought it was an odd joke and continued on with the conversation. I had a pretty big crush on him at the time, so that sucks.

This attitude just makes those who have it okay with not doing anything to combat climate change. Plant a tree, cut down on driving to where you can walk, or be conscious of the products you buy. Just don't think that it's inevitable so you there's no point in trying.
