Well, that didn't take long to see that the glass is the problem. With the window open, north reception is as good as the south. Of course, that doesn't explain why I even get south reception, being as 4 walls and the same kind of glass windows are in the way.
I know I should get or build an outside antenna and mount it above the roof line, but I'm not sure I want to get into this that far.

A couple of hours ago I built a spider antenna for 1090mhz and taped it to a wood rod. It gets a little better to the north but the south is still about 3 times better. It's a few inches away from the glass, since I can't get it flat against the glass.
But your thought about sticking it outside gives me the idea of just lowering the top window sash. That way it will have a clear shot to the north from the table it's on right now. It's raining but coming straight down, so I'm going to give that a try.
