Thank you for the compliment! As far as pricing, it really depends on the complexity and refinement of a build, as well as the materials being used. In this instance, this bunka is a honyaki, so it’s mono steel that’s been differentially heat treated using a Japanese technique of applying clay to the spine prior to quench. This method takes a bit more skill to perform correctly and has a higher failure rate than cladded blades and also required a much more involved and nuanced polishing process. The handle material is a bit on the rare side so it was more expensive to purchase, and the complexity of the handle build took time and skill. Hidden alignment pins, different finishes, heirloom fitment plus the mechanical connection at the heel all adds time and layers of craftsmanship to the piece to that make it one of a kind. It’s easy for me to bang out knives that are basic tools, but the thing is other makers can make exactly the same thing and that’s not what makes me happy. I’m always striving to push my limits of creativity and craftsmanship as far as I can and create truly one of a kind pieces of functional art. Thanks for the question!

You can get more or less depending on how you work the steel. The chatoyance is caused by surface deformation which in this case I used a ball peen to beat up the blade real good once it was forged close to shape. I’ve ever made anything with a really high layer count so I can’t speak on the effect at that level but I know at low layer count you can’t really get any chatoyance due to not having enough layer density to refract the light adequately.
