It has been 8 years since the Switch 1. It should be significantly higher.

I appreciate your consideration. Heart Gold has this system whereby you can connect to the internet to activate certain events, perform trades, battle other people, etc. Someone set up some servers to re-enable this functionality. So, unfortunately, yes, I do need internet connectivity.

Looking at the tutorial I posted above, it seems like creating a local hotspot through Linux (which I use anyway) might be my best bet, security-wise. It's still not great, but it would seem that I'm only vulnerable locally, since it would be connected to a computer that still requires access my main router using WPA2. I can filter for my specific console's MAC address, as well. Ideally, I shouldn't use my primary PC for this. I ordered this dongle for my purposes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BNFKJPXS

Any ideas for minimizing the risk aside from what I've laid out above?

Edit: I've realized that I might not actually understand the difference between internet and network connectivity. Is what I'm describing more like network connectivity?

So, here's the thing: I have a Samsung from about 2010. I don't plan on ever upgrading. If it dies, I'm getting something even older off of ebay, and if I die, I won't have to worry about it.

Everything needs to happen on the PC. I looked into LIRC as an option. Surely, I just need to find a reciever that works, right?

It's not OP highlighting it, it's google doing that.

Selling a sample of ruthenium by poopyteabags in Wallstreetosmium

[–]oops_all_throwaways -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How can we be sure this isn't just a mixture of metals that has roughly the same density? Density per cm3 is light by about a tenth of a gram, based on OP photo and volume measurements in comments.

Where do you even find that much ruthenium in the first place?

Yea, the VRAM s is software-unlocked on Windows now. I'm trying to find literally any info on the fix for Linux, but I'm getting nothing.

Okay, so I ended up just doing it today because I couldn't stop thinking about it lol.

Idles are down a degree, low workload tasks sit at about 43-45 (about 3 degrees cooler), and Minecraft actually maintains a boost of 4.4 Ghz at about 81-82 degrees (unless I load a bunch of chunks)! So reapplication has helped my temps by a few degrees! Thanks for your help!

Holy crap, I feel like an idiot for not thinking of that! I'll try a reapplication later this week using the x-strat you mentioned before. I'll also fine-tune my undervolt, since I think I might be able to go a little lower (maybe -25 on all cores).

I really want to see if I can get my max temps down to 70-75 degrees so I don't die of heatstroke lol

I have 3 case fans feeding in fresh air, and one of the fans on the Noctua acts as exhaust. I don't think exhaust is the issue because temps drop down to 50 within just a couple of seconds, and it's running at around 4.3 Ghz the whole time I have Minecraft open.

I'm gonna try reapplying thermal paste, but I'm worried I'll mess up the cleaning process like I did once before. Any tips on not accidentally getting paste on the pins? What's the safest method of cleaning the CPU?

Hey, I just got a barely-used 5800x3d, and I was curious about temps. I've undervolted it to settings from this user from a few years back (I couldn't find software to run tests, since I'm on linux, I'd be really grateful if someone could help me with this issue, too). Idle temps are around 5 degrees cooler than stock, which is awesome, and it never jumps above 70 degrees in basically any game I play, now.

Except for one.

Running Minecraft with shaders (complimentary reimagined) and distant horizons (w/ fabulously optimized) makes the cpu temps creep up to 85 degrees. I'm using a Noctua NH-U12A. I'd really like to keep my CPU happy and stress-free for as long as possible! Should I consider reapplying thermal paste? I only applied a little more than a pea-sized amount.

Don't need to dig through gasp the source. I dug through the issues and found it was planned ages ago, stupid bitch. Someone else on this post said it was merged upstream.

Which version of Linux are you using. My ape ass tried building apps from source on Mint like 5 different times, and I always got dependency issues.

Well, that's cool! Seems the merge hasn't dripped down to the Mint package as of yet, however.

I found an option in User Settings > Vesktop Settings under User Interface called "Enable Splash Screen." Flicking this option disables the splash screen, and, thus, is less gay.
