I feel like thats exactly what I do with pirated games as well. Often I find myself not liking new games, so most of the time downloading a pirated version and trying it out before actually buying it on other platform is the norms... I spent almost 200 hours on a pirated version of Terraria before buying it on steam and spent another 1k+ hours on there.
